Matt,
In '74 swapped out my 1.6 normal engine with a 1.3 Type 1 Vdub motor just to get around while I was rebuilding my original. It was just laying around and I thought "Why not!". It worked just fine for transportaion at 1.3 ltr. The type 4 is a better motor but you could also "just have fun with a type 1".

This costs less then the price as a 356 rebuild and is a lot more fun at 200hp.Paul Kust wrote:"just have fun with a type 1".
I had quite a bit of fun last Father's day when leaving the Litchfield VW show and catching up to a pack of Porsche's on Rt 8 when they left the Porsche show. The group sped up to 80mph and after a few miles the 356s dropped back and I was there with the 911s and 928s. I stayed with them all the way to the Bridgeport Ferry. While waiting for the ferry to arrive a few of the Porsche owners came over and wanted to know what I had under the decklid.
If you have a stock vehicle then keep it stock. But if you're looking for best bang for the buck, it's hard to beat a Type 1 engine.

Here, let me fix that for ya...Jake Raby wrote:There is no doubt that the Type 4 isn't a VW engine, in fact thats the reason I prefer it...
The Type 4 engine most certainly is a VW engine. It was originally designed for, as the name implies, the ill-fated VW Type IV. It was only later that it was modified for the VW Transporter, VW/Porsche 914 and the Porsche 912E.There is no doubt that the Type 4 isn't a VW Type I engine, in fact thats the reason I prefer it...

Correct.. But the 411/412 only failed due to its hideous looks.. The cars drive great and handle awesome and the engines go forever.. The full auto tranny works great and they had factory gas heat too!Bill Leavitt wrote:Here, let me fix that for ya...Jake Raby wrote:There is no doubt that the Type 4 isn't a VW engine, in fact thats the reason I prefer it...The Type 4 engine most certainly is a VW engine. My post should have stated "there is no doubt that the Type 4 IS a VW".. Sorry for the Type O..

Anyone running a VW motor in their 356
Michael,
I must make a statement:
The last time I received a posting from you via the talk-list, about the
Steering coupler in a "B" car..
It totally screwed up my in-box..
-------
I received at least 50-copies of it, and it finally locked up my computer..
It was like you kept
you finger on the SEND key, and never gave up!
----------
I spent more than 5-hours with Tech- support and finally had to sacrifice
all of my
inbound traffic since 2006.. some 6600+ messages..
----------
So, from here on out.. every time I see a message from you.. I will hit the
delete key
with vengeance.
---------
You want to talk about VW engines, post your comments on Samba or whatever.
Just my $0.02 on the issue

Post generated using Mail2Forum via email. If it is fun you are after you could sell the 356 cab and use the cash to
buy a replica.
A painstaking and accurate restoration will cost you many $$$.
If you don't restore the car sympathetically you will reduce it's value.
It has a real value now as it is in a rare original condition but if you
start putting in old VW
motors etc you will start to lose cash.
You can buy a souped up speedster replica for what you can sell the 356
cab for and still
have cash left over for James Dean sunspecs.
I can see a 165 HP version here.

Anyone running a VW motor in their 356
For the record and the money a VW swap is a great idea. half the price, double the HP and allows you to keep your 356 motor on an engine stand and admire it until you get the speed demon out of you.
There was a great write up a few years ago in 911 World Mag about a speedster in England and he had a 912 block with VW components and put out 160 hp.
Cost him less than redoing the original 356 motor.
He left the 356 motor original and cranks on it once a month.
I have a D project with no motor and although I have B motor 601082, I am trying to think what powerplant would go in it..eventually.

Jake, every type IV engine i have ever seen has the VW logos / name all over it. Part #s are clearly VW, even when buying from the Porsche. Even the name, TIV, indicates relationship with VW. Type I = bug. Type II = bus. Type III= variant. Type IV = 411/412. I am confused by your comment on this. What kind of engine do you consider it to be?

Several years ago I removed my 4-cam engine to preserve it and installed a 2.0L 914 engine.
At 1850# the car hauls and even sounds like a 4-cam.
Running dual Dellortos and an upright fan housing. I fabricated the cyl. covers from 4 front 914 covers #1 & 3. because the car is 12 volt the altenator works fine too.
it has torque out the wazoo and easily pulls to redline in 4th.
I enjoy it and I don't have to worry about overhauling the 4-cam (big bucks) and if it blows I throw it away and install another Or refurbish it on the cheep.
Does anyone care? I doubt it.

Anyone running a VW motor in their 356
I have a local friend (unnamed to protect the not so innocent)
that had a VW engine in his 1959 356A, He has run the &**% out of it and
it finally 'blew' enroute to the Tenn. Tubs BBQ earlier this summer. I
have seen exploded engines before but this one must have let go at
speed.
Anyway, circum$tances required a VW motor replacement and it is
now in and running and will make the ECH trip in a couple of weeks.
If a 356 engine had blown it would have been big bucks, and
possibly the loss of a original engine. With the VW he got back on the
road for a fraction of the cost.
Yes, not pure and maybe some folks will turn up their noses but
he is glad to be back on the road with his beloved 356. This is a car
that would have been parted out but he has lovingly returned it to the
road and he is enjoying it. That's all that really matters. Having fun
with what you have...

Anyone running a VW motor in their 356
Norm,
I fabricated the
cyl. covers from 4 front 914 covers #1 & 3.
I'm sure you could make some nice sealing tin, but every swap I've seen looks like the tin was made of flattened beer cans. And there's the added attraction of that 'bridge girder' throttle linkage for the Webers. Lovely...
Thanks,
Ron LaDow
