Outlaw Engine Choices

Today's Dana Point Concours left me thinking about the engine choice for my new Outlaw.

Orginal 356 engine (modified performance)
Type IV (Aircooled Technology has a nice one)
911 Four cylinder (Polopolus engine)

Thoughts?

Original 356 motor modified for performance $12K to over $20K, assuming you have a motor to start with. Type 4 - Under $10K, but not a Porsche. Polo Motor - minimum $30K. Pick your price point.

Thanks Bill. The Polo motor sounds amazing. Has anyone had one? Is it worth it?

Kevin,

The Emorys have used many in their outlaws over the years (http://www.emorymotorsports.com/home/77?task=view) . Justin Rio on the projects page has a thread about restoring his carrera and he is using a very high spec Polo motor in it. Or you can go to Dean Polopolus's web page, (http://www.advanceperformanceeng.com/about_us) look at the photos and give Dean a call. He is a very nice guy.

You wont get a Raby Type IV for under $10K, I've just had one built, but unfortunately the rest of the car isn't ready yet so it may be some time until I can post my opinions. I would have loved a Polo motor - MNO

There's always the Type 1 VW engine.

I had done the Type I (2276cc) and loved it. Could always return the car back to stock, totally reversible.

Thanks Cameron. Let me know when you get it running. I plan to call Raby soon to talk about options. I think his engine is closer to 15K. Also plan on calling Polopolus although it seems that the 911/4 will be closer to $28K. Unfortunately, MNO is not in the picture, there is a budget...but if it is worth it, I would rather wait for the Polo.

Talk to Jake, he can build you anything you want. just be prepared to pay and wait for it... he's got a few months backlog on projects.

taking nothing away from mr. raby, building a great type IV engine does not require $10k+, especially if you would like to keep stock 914 fuel injection - you should be able to build a 2056cc stock fuel injection engine in the $5-7k range (120hp) , and if you want carbs, you can change the cam, increase displacement, get higher compression pistons (keith black seems to be most recommended) and get in the 140-160 hp range - one problem with the type IV in a 356 is its look (no problem in an outlaw), custom tin fitting, and custom exhaust/heat exchanger work - See, http://www.tangerineracing.com/616Headers.htm - this stuff can get real pricey -

check out tlg auto in socal - tony and his son marco built an awesome 356 with a type IV engine, which was featured in excellence a few years ago - they also used a swb early 911 rear suspension and a 901 gear box - i have spoken with both of them (fellow r gruppe members) and i think they built their type IV 140-160 hp engine in the $5k range - check out - http://www.tlgauto.com/about

if you are going to spend big money, you may notice that dollar for hp, a 911 engine could be a great choice - again, you will have a lot of issues to address in the install, but getting over 200hp with a 911 engine (especially on a 78-89 engine) is really a no brainer - again, emory would be a great resource for this

I built an inexpensive 2.1-liter 914/Type 4 engine recently (nearly stock, just a nice cam) and loved Raby's upright fan housing conversion. I used Bosch pressure-sensor fuel injection, but just for engine compartment aesthetics, I fabricated intake manifolds to accept 40-PII Solex carbs, which I'm using only for their throttle plates (and their factory aluminum-mesh air cleaners).

I vote for modified original. It completes the Porsche 356 experience. If you want an all out hot rod, buy an early 911!!!
