Disc Brake Chrome Wheels

#1 Post by Paul Hatfield »

I would like to know more about the painted areas on the disc brake chrome wheels. It seems to me that the 356 cars "mostly" came with no primer in the center on the outward facing side, and a light colored primer on the back. Somewhere along the line, this changed to a gray color of primer that was found "mostly" on the 911-912.

However, there is overlap between these cars. The wheels are date stamped, so easy to know when a wheel was made.

Questions: When was the change to gray? What is an good match to the light colored primer that was used?

Thanks,
Paul

Paul

The change to grey was made before the C was introduced. The earlier wheels (wide 5s) had a yellowish primer on the inside and the back side and then changed to grey. The centers were painted black eventually in the 911/912 era. I seem to remember some yellowish painted C wheels, though. Most of us never paid any attention to stuff like that.

Jim was too busy chasing women in his youth and scrapping Carrera Coupes to look at wheels!

I have a "C" disk brake chrome 4/5 x 15 wheel with the outward center painted light grey. Wheel is dated 3/64. I can post a pic if wanted. Has not been repainted.

Charlie-
Picture would help me at least. I believe we may find some originals not painted in the center. For the back side, I believe we may find some light ivory and some the gray color. Dates here can be very helpful regards the timing of the change. Not even sure the gray color remained the same (may have gotten darker?). Anyway, pictures would be great.
Thank you,
Paul

Charlie-
Would you say that the gray color was very close to the same color as the original muffler color? Also, what about other parts of the rim- Backside and the area exposed to air (inside)?

Yes, close to muffler grey, but don't have one to compare. Back of wheel same grey.

My 64 SC built in Fall of 63 has the original wheels. They are dated 63 and have the gray on the back and in the center on the front.

Speaking of paint, how does one go about painting the front center area of the disk brake wheel? Originally there must have been some sort of template to cover the outside of the wheel, as the painted area is kind of an odd shape because of the "bumps" sticking out that hold the hubcap in place. What do serious concours types do to paint their wheels?
