Authentication help needed

#1 Post by Ramu Swamy »

I am looking at a 63' 356. VIN 213717, engine serial 800690. It is listed in the registry database with these two numbers. The problem I have is that 800690 is not in the range of engine serial numbers listed for this model VIN. However it shows up as a 1960 motor. Why does the registry list this engine as original engine on the site? Any help is appreciated.

There is a glitch in the 63 motors, they started with 0, so the original motor for the 63 Super 90 car may have been 0800690, which is a 63 Super 90 motor. The 0 gets dropped a lot when people input it because it does not seem significant.
Engine 0800690 would have been in serial # 212172-214400, so the range is correct.

Adam, i get it so I have to add a 5 in front of the 0800690 when I search in the database right.

Yup, everytime I sell a 63 Super 90 motor I have a whole bunch of guys emailing me saying
the engine I am selling is actually a 60 motor, I politely explain the 0 and the 5 when they type it
into the database.

Ramu, you can also use this site http://356a.com/ to search for chassis and engine numbers. That site shows that 800690 is a 1960 production year, type 616/7, S90 engine.

I highly recommend buying Brett Johnson's invaluable book "The 356 Porsche, A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity, Rev. III", at http://www.tpr-inc.com/products/singlei ... mber=75816 which provides accurate information about chassis and engine numbers (as well as a wealth of interesting information about how the various 356 models were manufactured).

You are correct that engine 800690 was not originally installed in 213717. It would have been used in a 1960 model year T5 356B coupe, cabriolet, or Roadster.

However, if the engine number is really 0800690, that would be a 1963 production year S90 engine. Brett's book also makes that clear. There were 500 S90 engines made in that year numbered from 0800501 to 08001000.

So did you actually inspect the car you posted about? If so, what is the engine number in the car: 800690 or 0800690?

Best regards,

Barry

Thanks for the clarification, I did verify the engine # to be 0800690 which is right for that year. DEAL IS DONE AND I WILL BE A PROUD OWNER OF A 356 NEXT WEEK.

Regards,

Ramu, congratulations! I look forward to seeing photos and hearing more about the car. You can start a new topic in the Main Discussion Forum when you get the car, and post photos.
