Third Piece - Small vs Large Oil Pump
How can I tell if the third piece on my '60 coupe has the small or lager oil pump?

Re: Third Piece - Small vs Large Oil Pump
Thanks for posting the pics Jon. I have an unstamped/blank third piece and I am trying to figure out if it is compatible with the early or later (large) pump. Are the specs the same or are there diferences? If so, can I look to any visual markers to distinguish between the two types?

If you smell beer, you don't have the small one.Marc Allingham wrote:How can I tell if the third piece on my '60 coupe has the small or lager oil pump?

Re: Third Piece - Small vs Large Oil Pump
Marc,
The small pump chamber is 24mm deep, slightly less than 1", and will have one gear shaft fixed in the housing. The large pump chamber is 36mm deep, almost 1.5", and will not have a gear shaft. If it's possible to post a photo, we can identify it as 356A/B/C or 912.
Dave, if the other is an ale, it'll be difficult to tell any difference that way.

Thanks again Jon. The one in my possession is the early version; measuring 24mm.

Re: Third Piece - Small vs Large Oil Pump
From the exterior the pump cover lays almost flat to the surface of the 3rd piece. The larger pump's body casting will rise about 6mm above the surface of the 3rd piece. The Porsche spec book says that up to motor, 356B, 75614 and 84771 it would be the small pump. Having said that you need to look at yours, my experience shows all sorts of things done to these motors over the years.

Re: Third Piece - Small vs Large Oil Pump
Can I replace my original third piece with one that has the large oil pump without making any modifications?

Yes; just use the gasket to make sure all the holes line up--especially the oil ports.

Figures, that my 60 roadster original engine (COA) has a small oil pump, engine 84830. Just a few numbers off the last of the smaller type.
