356's at the Rolex 24hr: Daytona Beach, Fl. - Jan 24-25 2009

Every year I take the 356 down to catch the 24hr race. This year there are a few members of the Florida Owners Group who will be taking there 356's also. We are planning to camp again in the infield & usually are close to the PCA corral. One thing not to miss is the Saturday 11am Rolex 24 Heritage Exhibition laps. Several vintage Porsche's do parade laps around the track before the start of the 24hr. I hope to see you & your 356's there as well.

Here is a pic from our campsite last year:

tickets(these are only 2 options, there are more):

2009 ROLEX 24 HOUR 2-DAY PKG - $45.00 - infield/grandstand & does not include garage access

Here's the schedule:

I just received an email from my local PCA region regarding another ticket option. For a few extra dollars you get to eat lunch with Brian Redman on Friday, two parade laps in your Porsche Saturday morning & special seating at turn 1 on the road course for the race. See below for details:

MILESTONES ’09 - AT THE ROLEX 24 HOURS

AN INVITATION TO SPORTS CAR OWNERS AND CLUB MEMBERS

Friday, January 23, 2009

Milestones is your opportunity to participate in the legendary Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Created for the sports car racing fan, Milestones offers a look at the history of the sport, lunch and a visit with Grand Marshal Brian Redman, winner of the ’81 Rolex 24 and one of the true heroes of the sport. You will have an opportunity to see some famous race cars up close, tour the racing garages and enjoy reserved seating for the race at turn one. To complete your Milestones participation, a truly special Daytona experience; two parade laps of the 3.76 mile road course on Saturday morning.

Cost for the three day Rolex 24 Hours event, including Milestones, is $185. Each member will receive a welcome bag containing a Rolex event hat and pin, plus a race program and poster. Milestones will be located in the Daytona 500 Club. A light breakfast will be served Friday at 8:30 am , then a tour of the garages at 10 am , with lunch starting at noon . Lunch will be followed at 1 pm by a talk with Brian Redman, conducted by well known vintage racer, Murray Smith.

To determine how to order your Rolex 24/Milestones tickets, we suggest you contact RT Hall at left_turn@mchsi.com. Or you can speak with RT directly at 229 563 8824. He will be glad to direct you and answer any questions you may have.
I just talked to him. RT said to call 1800pitshop to get the milestone tickets. He expects the 200+ tickets to sell out by Jan. 1.

We advise you to place your orders promptly as we do have a limited capacity. We look forward to welcoming you to Milestones. You’ll meet some interesting people, have some laughs and share in a unique motorsports experience.

Guys,

It's looking like there will be a few 356Burgh guys there.

I managed to get scheduled in my Melbourne office the weeks before and after the event so I'll be there. Tony Tuminello will be freshly retired and will be camping in his VW camper van. I think that we've convinced Ed Kriscunas to make the drive down from Hilton Head. And, we suspect that E. Paul Dickinson will be working at the event.

OK, I've got Florida for January and California in March. What can I do in February to escape the cold ?

The 21 would be a lot more practical in the infield, wouldn't it! Not nearly as much fun as those 16s on the track, though.....I'll be there with the 356 unless it looks like the weather is bad. You know what a wimp I am about getting my baby wet :-)

Just bought my Milestone ticket. It came out to be $199 with the handling fee. Looking forward to 2 laps around the track again. I asked how many Milestone tickets were left & they didn't know. I'd be nice to see more than 2 356's on the track. Just got a new digital video camera for christmas, so I hope to be able to post the laps on You Tube.

Will,
You gonna bring the EZ camper?

To all others I just received this update from my PCA region about practice sessions for this upcoming weekend. Here is the note:

There will be testing for the 24 Hours of Daytona this weekend (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) at Daytona International Speedway. This testing is open to the public with full access to the FanZone and garages for only $10. You can buy a ticket as you enter the tunnel. The track opens at 9am on Saturday morning with testing all day. They also plan to do some night testing on Saturday night. Sunday and Monday hours are 9am – 5pm.

This will be a great opportunity to see some of the cars and drivers up close prior to the race

Drove down today for the Sunday practice session. I wasn't surprised, but didn't see another 356 present. I did however, run into a couple of Florida Owners Group members.(John Miegs & Bob Hartley). The weather was perfect! Lets hope it's like this in a couple of weeks. 70's, sunny and breezy! Hope to see you there!

I'm driving down around lunch tomorrow. Everyone from Jacksonville has backed out with the exception of Chad N. Chad will be driving down early Saturday. I will be camping Thurs/Fri/Sat nights in my 2 person tent. Sunny with highs in the low 70's and lows in the upper 40's. Packing the 356 with beer, a sleeping bag, fire pit and firewood. I do know Jack from Gainesville will be driving his 1953 356 coupe down Friday. Looking forward to shooting some video behind his '53 driving around the track.

I will be camping just west of the PCA Porsche corral.
