eBay sales tax
I think I'm about done with eBay now that they're collecting sales tax for most states. With shipping and sales tax, I paid 21% and 40% above prices on two recent purchases. Sellers are also paying eBay and Paypal fees totaling 12%, which of course is reflected in the purchase price.

Re: eBay sales tax
Bruce,
I don't buy on eBay, but it wasn't their decision:
"On June 21, 2018, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in SOUTH DAKOTA v. WAYFAIR that remote sellers that meet certain economic thresholds, are required to collect and remit sales and use taxes in many states based upon the delivery address of the order.
Before this ruling, a remote seller was not required to collect sales tax unless the seller had a physical presence in the state where delivery was made. As of June 21, 2018, the physical presence requirement has been removed."
https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/tax.asp
(I just linked to Pegasus since it was the first one which provided background)
And it is far more complicated than 50 calculations and filings; state-wide tax rates are a thing of the past. There are now nearly 10,000 individual jurisdictions.

I always thought no tax was a nice perk that would eventually disappear. Unfortunately it has, but it seems reasonable to me.

Yeah, but when you're a seller, it's just a cost of doing business. Set prices to build in the costs.Bruce Smith wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2019 10:07 am I think I'm about done with eBay now that they're collecting sales tax for most states. The changes in ebay and paypal that I find annoying are every year you have less protections. Both companies used to stand by sellers and back them up in disputes. I remember early on we were in the top 1% of paypal, even had our own problem solver, those days are long gone. You're lucky now if you even get a call back, you will probably just get a form email with no way of replying that gives you some version of "you're on your own, don't bother us, we are counting money".

Re: eBay sales tax
It wasn't eBay's decision, but they've ratcheted up their fees (and Paypal fees, which they own) in a no sales tax environment. Fair or not, it all adds up to a pretty big chunk. A big seller might build in costs. But I'd guess many small sellers will go elsewhere.

Re: eBay sales tax
I prefer no longer to use pay pal, the fees are outrageous. When buying parts from the US or paying for metal work on my 56 I have been using transferwise. Highly recommended.

Re: eBay sales tax
are there any fees attached to that and are they able to do international transfers ?
in Canada, I simply pay by bank e transfer, no cost to either party and instantanious
Most US sellers dont seam to know about this, not sure why, it gets them paid quickly..
downside is no recourse at all, so only with trusted sellers..

Re: eBay sales tax
Transferwise is designed for transfers internationally. Fees do apply but are less than other services. Not quite as easy as PayPal.

Re: eBay sales tax
the problem is that ebay has a monopoly and they are using that fact to their best advantage. Where else can one sell used parts and collectibles? They well earned their nickname "evilbay". They HATE the sellers treating them like they are employee slaves

I also don't care for eBay. If I need a particular part I will put a want ad on the Registry, TheSamba, Pelican Parts, etc. It is the rare item that is not available elsewhere.

Re: eBay sales tax
Ebay is great. Just bought a rear caliper complete for a 1982 Honda FT500 Ascot. $35, used ignition, steering, helmet, gas cap for the bike.
4 locks and one key where else can you find a not very common part ?
Just sold my 54 cab dash for $1800 and bought the correct 53 dash from Adam for $1500.
Taxes Fees are just part of life, huge audience on Ebay.
What I hate is the "Pack 40" same 40 guys re-listing the same 40 OVERPRICED items week after week, for years till they die.
Pack 40 on Samba sucks too. Pack 40 get a life, lower your price so your crap will sell. Then you can move on and have some fun.

I don’t love eBay but it fills a need for some buyers and sellers. And tax is to be paid by the purchaser, it’s their problem. Seller just has aggravation of collecting it.

Re: eBay sales tax
1) eBay does NOT own PayPal. PayPal is a public company spun off from eBay a few years ago.
2) eBay has set up it's own payment system and has tried to educate sellers about the advantages of using the eBay payment system rather than the PayPal system. For a small seller like myself, it allows me to accept credit card payments.
3) eBay is certainly not the only game in town as it was 10 years ago. etsy is a very popular web site for collectables. There are also some automotive accessories on that site. Car club web sites, groups of common interest using social media. eBay has many competitors. The idea that eBay is the only game in town is no longer valid.
4) eBay does reach a very large group of buyers from all over the world. I sell classic car spotlights and fog lights for 30's to 60's cars. Recent sales to Finland, Sweden and Australia are examples of why eBay is a big help.

Re: eBay sales tax
I have to agree. Way down here in Australia, we suffer badly from expensive shipping costs, especially when companies like Pelican and the other US-based ones, farm out their shipping to a third party company who then makes a further profit from the shipping. A $10.00 washer can cost $30 in 'standard shipping. Now the Australian Goverment has decided that we should also pay 10% SALES tax on the full cost (item plus shipping) to them for items bought internationally! Makes it so unpleasant to buy anything. Fortunately some German and UK sources still package their own items at real cost (as often does eBay) and we can reduce the costs somewhat.
