914 Spitting thru Webers at Low RPM

#1 Post by Conrad Carter »

Just got my 914 back from Chico Performance for repair (bent/broken valves...don't ask!) and enhancement (porting heads and intake) and installed. Trying to get it running and having trouble with idling....doesn't want to! Seems to be spitting thru carbs when I give it gas at low RPM (off idle). Acts a little like a vacuum leak but have checked intake, carb and spark plugs and all is tight. Don't see a vacuum port on 44 IDF's. Tried adjusting timing a little bit but didn't help. Accelerator pumps appear to be shooting plenty of fuel. Any thoughts on possible areas to investigate.

try squirting a little ether around the gaskets, look for an RPM increase and re check the valve clearance. Then refer to the book of off color Italian hand jesters

I'm know I'm going to regret jumping into a 914/44IDF discussion, but spitting thru carbs at low RPM normally means your idle jets are too small. Start with volume screws out about 1-1/2 turns. Accelerator pumps shouldn't be "shooting plenty of fuel", just a little is enough. I know the jets/AP advice sounds contrary, but it's not. Hand jesters may help you, but the carbs are too dumb to understand, and probably aren't Italians anyway. Not even European anymore, I think...

I've had a 74 14 @1986 with 44 idf always smells of gas fun but hard to get in to these days.

Conrad if the enhancement you mentioned is flowing more air then I agree with Craig try larger idle jets. Mike

A couple off color hand gestures.

Looks like I had some bad fuel. Lots of sediment in filters, pump and carbs! Plus valves needed adjusting.
