The 912 E

That's why we are here, Off Topic Forum
Just came in to the latter part of the TV show 'Wheeler Dealers'. Very interesting and you can see where the 912 got it's lines, like a 356D !
What actually was the 912E ? as I thought production of the 912 and the 356 derived engine finished in the late 60's.

912E was a short lived lower priced loss leader that filled in between ending production of 914 and beginning production of 924. Basically the 911 body with the 2.0 liter engine from VW.

They have a cult following, but are not worth a whole lot. My guess is with that heavy body they are underwhelming, unlike the original 912 that was light enough that a smaller engine worked.

My recollection from back in the day was that with the rudimentary smog controls in place (at least here in good ol' California) the engine had an official output of all of 76HP. Definitely a stopgap car. At least the earlier 912's had about 20HP more, not like that was killer...
