Don't do it often enough to remember which goes into which, but I just learned a way that sticks in mind:
"Do it as ya oughta/
Add acid to the watta.."

or the watta gets otta. Due to the exothermic reaction.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

The cause of the muking fess was not a mystery; the process which resulted in the cause was what I couldn't remember.

Easy way to remember: adding water to acid means the mixture starts at a very high concentration and becomes more dilute. That can be trouble.

The other way, adding acid to water, means the solution starts very dilute and becomes more concentrated. No trouble.
