Do you know why your car has carrera on it?

#1 Post by Neil Bardsley »

Mrs B and I stopped a place to eat while we were out in the 356. A couple leaving complemented us on the car and as they walked towards their 911 carrera. I used to opportunity to ask him if he knew why Porsche had put Carrera on the back of his car. I see lots of Carrera's in London and I suspect that most owners have no idea of Porsche history. It appears that I was correct he didn't have a clue but I was happy to help him.

PS as a footnote I think Porsche has completely ruined the Carrera label as it now has almost has zero value.

Much as they did in the middle 70s with the 911S, 10 extra hp is not a 911S make.

Porsche has no option but to do so.
US IP laws require the owner of a copy-righted name to keep it active by regular (retail sales) use of that name every X years, or they lose control of it.
Sorta like Al Z. griping about the factory suing him, but by US IP law, they have no choice; let Al use it, and now every Uzbekistan back-yard foundry can cast up crankshafts and stick the Porsche name on it.
I owned and drove the crap out of a 250 Ferrari Lusso for some 15 years; you can imagine how wonderful I find the "new" Lusso station wagon:

Tough; Ferrari owes me nothing.
