"Ok Folks
I have pushed the previous announcement down and just added to the text so as not to appear to obfuscate by deleting. This matter was discussed in some great detail at the latest Trustee Meeting(as it was at the meeting that lead to the first rule change) Quite frankly I tire of the time expended in this vein but I hope this shows a willingness of the Trustees to try and strike a balance that suits a majority. If anyone would like to discuss the genesis of this whole exercise I believe you know where you can find my phone number.
The new rule as voted by the entire board and in effect as of this posting is:
Witty statements as referenced below are still allowed
Web addresses are again allowed as in www. - along with your given name as your signature.
One or the other, your decision. "

Curt, since I found the earlier restriction on signatures mostly by accident, it seems this needs to be posted under the 'main discussion' menu to make it known to all and sundry, including those who rarely look at the house-keeping stuff above.
Am I to assume I can again attach http://www.precisionmatters.biz to my signature?
BTW, I'd hope that, as a group, we are all capable of ignoring any 'bad words' tagged onto any signature, so the earlier attempt at limiting a signature is a bit of a mystery to me.
I'm not sure what was accomplished or intended to be accomplished by the earlier and current restrictions. Put simply, it seems we're all adults here and capable of ignoring that which we choose.

Ron, if that is a correct quote, that's as clear as mud.

Correct, nobody looks at "latest news" where official announcements are made. When news announcements are made very infrequently why would you? Official news announcements should be done as posts so they show up as new unread items like everything else.

This whole “controversy” has had me baffled from the beginning. Are there really people that have nothing better to do with their precious, irreplaceable existence then get in a froth about someone putting a couple of extra lines at the end of their posts? And then complaining about it enough to get that practice banned? Just don’t look at it, or don’t patronize their businesses if you are that offended. TF is wrong with you people? J

Maybe this should go to "Off Topic"?

To name names, Adam's constant self-promo (absent any real content), is, well, tiresome. But I have some big boy pants, and am capable of ignoring posts when appropriate. Or responding when appropriate.
Appealing to the monitors: Allow posts/sigs other than *political statements*, *religious ditto* (which are guaranteed to cause explosions from various sides). And if anyone offers 'dates' with 'a niece', you'd be equally correct in pulling the plug.
Other than that, if someone gripes, tell 'em to grow up. Or tell them to contact me; I'll be happy to do so.
I know that A-1 does not apply to private organizations, but the intent should inform them (us): The remedy to bad speech is not to deny that speech but to counter it with good speech. We are adults.

Ron-
We've never met so there is no way you could know this about me, but I talk a lot. On a good day I can keep it down, on a bad day I'm finishing other people's sentences. Is that obnoxious to others, yes it is, which is why I try and keep a handle on it. Basically I have a lot of energy, which is probably why I run my own business, volunteer to do art classes at my kid's school's, build my own cars, and do things like help my son Max get 2nd place in the Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby this year, my cup runneth over with energy. How does that translate to my on-line presence, well, it spills over there too. I'm active on this board and most of the Porsche boards weighing in on any number of things, but I'm also on the Mercedes boards where I have no business interest, as well as many other non-Porsche forums. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you and anyone else wants to characterize me as obnoxious for talking to much, well, I can probably agree with you there. But what I'm not doing is working this club as some sort of promotion for my business. That is false and wrong. I've been active in this club since I joined almost 15 years ago with my contributions to the magazine. Remember my movie column? Well, it pre-dated my Porsche business by years, I wrote it because I wanted to, because I have lots of ideas, not to further Unobtanium (it didn't even exist when I was writing that column). It's the same reason I've always made sure to have Registry material in all my gift bags, I can't see how that helps me, but it does help the club. Being at every swap meet on the east coast with a large Registry banner and having club materials going out to people is sometimes the only presence the club gets at these events. It also can't hurt to have someone under 50 passing stuff out, attracting other younger guys, something this club very much needs.
Bottom line, like me, don't like me, I can't control that, but don't characterize me as some money grubbing marketeer who uses this club as some sort of promotional tool for my business, that's wrong and frankly mean. And while this is directed at Ron, it applies to everyone else who holds this view, you know who you are.

I agree except for the above quote. Ron, give love a chance!

Here's my take on the whole thing....whatever you think of someone on this forum based on their posts, pictures, whatever, you will have a completely different opinion of them once you meet them in person, and almost always for the positive. If we were all sitting around a big table having dinner with a lively conversation, the same people saying the same things would not bother you at all because there would be context which is completely lacking in the world of online forums.

This has been my experience when meeting many of the people who are considered annoying on this forum. For example, before I met Cliff in person, I thought he was a horse's ass, now I just think he's an ass, so there is progress there...

Agreed; I do not know Adam and have no way of either liking him or not; my comments here are specifically limited to his posts here. Not at Adam.
Which is beside the point I trying to make:
I find his posts tiresome. That is not his problem, nor yours nor the moderators'. It is MY problem and if I'm not adult enough to deal with it, why, I'll go over to Twitter and tweet about how the world is unfair, and you can all laugh at me.
Point: With the exclusions noted above, let Adam post as he pleases. None of my business.

I work hard at being a horse's ass. It takes skill.

Forums are not the best place for sensitive people.

I'm not so sure that outlawing a commercial signature is critical, especially when one of our well known suppliers (not Adam, nor Ron either) turns nearly every one of his posts into a pitch for his company's products......

So true. Online there are the same kind of people as in everyday life-- Sensitive, harsh, kind, strident, thoughtful etc, etc. The problem with forums is when sensitive people are also vocal, rules get put into place that penalize everyone, not just the intended targets.

In this case the change to allow comercial web addresses back into signatures, but without any kind of promotional wording, was what I think a good compromise so that not everyone is punished.
