Show Me Original Grey Carpet

#1 Post by Greg Carter »

My ‘65C is an original Bali blue over grey car and the interior was redone several years ago. The carpet appears to have been replaced and is a medium to light grey color. From the few pictures of color samples I’ve seen, original grey carpet looks like it was a darker shade. Does anybody have any original grey interior with grey carpet pictures they could share? I’d love to see what shade of grey the carpet originally was.

Something I learned recently: original carpet had more loops per inch than what is supplied by Autos and Tony Garcia. Carpet with more loops is available from a couple of German suppliers.

Gents,

Thanks for the replies. I’d seen Mr. White’s site with the C / SC carpet samples, the dark grey color it showed led me to ask the question. I believe the original grey carpet that would have been standard with light grey vinyl interior panels was the dark grey carpet. I’d love to see original interior C /SC cars with grey interior to see what shade the carpet was. Anybody a car or pictures to help confirm?

I have a T6B, with (I believe) original light gray interior. Can take some photos for you tomorrow.

Thanks for the pictures.

I know you could order just about any paint / interior/ carpet color you wanted so there might not be a “correct” answer per se. I’m pretty sure my car, based on the Kardex, was a run of the mill, non-special order car. With that, I believe the carpet color would’ve been what ever was “standard” at the time it was built in early 1965.

I wonder if early 911’s would’ve used the same carpet as a late 356 C / SC. I think early 911s did use wool loop carpet instead of the later Perlon carpet.

And if you look in Dirk-Michael Conradt's book on page 63 (English version) describing the standard spec 1952 car, this carpet is referred to as quality grade II carpet. Mysterious. =)

I don’t know if it helps you, but photos of what I think is original carpet from my T6B, with light gray interior, are attached.

PS, if anyone has any suggestions for preventing the splits in the vinyl of my driver’s seat from getting worse, please let me know.

Thanks Gents.

I think a darker grey carpet may be correct but I’m hoping others will chime in and add more data points. I think my carpet is too light but just don’t know. I’ve tracked down a couple of previous owners but those I’ve spoken to owned the car after the carpet was replaced. Id like to track down the original owner or a family member of hers to see if they’ve got pictures of the car when it was still fairly new.

This is not "original" but it is NOS new and hand fitted by the best 356 interior man in the country. And it's my favorite shade of gray. Gray must look either a tad blue, green, brown, or violet. I prefer it to break to the green side.

NOS means New Old Stock meaning Porsche or their suppliers made the item during the period the cars were built. Your carpet cannot be NOS because it would not fit your car.

You have a kit car Eric. We all know it. Plus you said in another post you wouldn't want an old 356 because they are slow.
