I have a 2007 Subaru Forester with 21,000 miles. For the last year, I have driven 450 miles. Do I really need to get my oil and filter changed and my tires rotated?

If tires are original then you need new ones they are 10 years old. Oil change is cheap. Just do it.

Well that's certainly off topic.

I just bought some cheap 40,000 mile tires for my Subaru. My wife is not happy me buying the cheapest. Here's my question: In the first 5000-10,000 miles, is it safer to have a 40,000-mile tire or an 80,000-mile tire?

Your wife is correct. Only use the 40,000 mile tires for the first 10,000 miles. Then immediately switch to the 80,000 mile tires for the remainder. You will soon find that, using the logic in the above process, you will only ever have to buy 40,000 mile tires. Because you will be buying new tires every 10,000 miles, your wife won't know the difference.

Gerald -
Since this is a 356 Porsche website, recommend you direct your Sabaru related questions to a Sabaru website, from which you can obtain advice from knowledgeable Sabaru owners.

Sorry, guys. I know that "off Topic" is supposed to be for non-356 issues, but I guess I'll take my questions somewhere else. Thanks.

OK. Maybe that was a little harsh but this is a 356 site, or at least a Porsche site, isn't it?
Have you tried checking this? http://www.cars101.com/subaru/subaru_maintenance.html

Unless the 450 miles per year you did was on a race track, you could get by with the cheapest name brand tire. the rubber will deteriorate before you wear them out.
I would change the oil at least yearly just to get any condensation out of the engine. I probably wouldn't bother with the filter though, maybe every other year.
Sounds like you need to trade that Subaru for the new 2018 Boxster! Or something you'll want to drive more than 450 mi/yr.
