US Compliance Plate

#1 Post by Eric McKinley »

I was having a look through a few websites today and came across this.

It is advertised as a US Compliance Plate.

I have never seen this installed on a 356.

Does anyone have one of these on their car and where was it installed.

Many Thanks.

I looked at SMC's ad and although it lists it for the 356 and 911's, I've never seen one on a 356.

Not on any of my cars, and I have never seen one on any other 356 or air cooled VW I have ever worked on.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Exactly,

I have looked at a lot of 356's over the last 3 years I have owned my car.

As I mention I have never came across this before.

As the second owner, I can state my C is within the last couple of hundred built in 1965, and it does not have one of those. Having spoken at length with the first owner, I can say with real certainty that he did not remove anything like that from the car.

According to Wikipedia, "The first regulation, FMVSS No. 209, was adopted on 1 March 1967"
The compliance sticker was not required at first, but as more Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) were adopted, the sticker was required, but I don't know when - the '70s possibly ...

Not a 356 part, but a 1968 (or later) model year 911/912 part that preceded the door jamb sticker with the same information and was riveted to the hinge post on U.S-market cars. There are enough E911/912 owners here who can clarify this further (years, driver/passenger side, et cetera).
