‘Nother vid, calling all machinists.

#1 Post by Ron LaDow » Wed Mar 22, 2017 1:05 am

Suffice to say my father had a home wood-working shop, so cutting and/or joining wood was no mystery. The father of a friend up the street had a home machine shop (live steam locomotives); cutting metal became clear also. And then a somewhat older friend was given worn-out machine tools for Christmas one year, and a place to put them.
Friend and I learned machining techniques by reconditioning the machine tools; I was 13 or 14 when I learned how to pour babbit bearings, center a cutting tool on a lathe, how much a mill cutter can take per pass, how to weld the stuff together, etc. Pretty hot stuff, right?
Well, cast your eyes right here! Mr. Crispin looks to be in his mid twenties and he’s using techniques I didn’t learn until MUCH later than that. He also has tooling appropriate to his skills; expensive and deserved.

I’m guessing when I was playing with blocks, he was figuring out how to center a work-piece in a 4-jaw.

Bowing down to him. That series is truly impressive, if you like machinist skills.

Jim, I'd guessed there were more chip-makers. Regardless, that guy is machine-porn to those who cut metal or design for those who do

Mike, if you grew up in Cinti, that stuff was in the air and you learned it osmotically; I can do now (at 71) what he can do.
At age 20! I'm amazed that his membrane is porous enough to have absorbed that amount by that age.
But I'm also left dumb-struck by the panel-beaters among us. Every time I try that, it looks like a sack full of potatoes.

My grandfather was a machinist and my dad a welder for Standard Oil, now Chevron. Unfortunately for me, neither brought their work home so I never got an opportunity to learn either skill. Boy could I use them now!

Hats off to those skilled in these arts.

Hi Ron,
I enjoyed watching the Vid and it took me back to my Engineering apprenticeship days. Milling, Turning, Grinding, Fitting, and calculations, all the basic disciplines. You never lose it, all in a days work but just don't have the machine shop!. I share your interest. My Wife thinks I'm mad watching Porsche and VW engines screaming on the Dynos on You Tube. I'm sure your choice of viewing is equally interesting and keeps you off the streets, I think she would pull the same face if she saw me watching a machining video! I can always say that at least it isn't a porno!
Cheers Jay
