Hoard new parts now?

#1 Post by Dan Epperly »

Since this is a non political site, I will refrain from any comments on the current regime, other than to wonder if others besides me are worried about a sharp rise in the price of new parts, many of which are made overseas, should Trump actually follow up with his threat of raising a tariff on imports. I am seriously thinking about buying stuff I have no need for in the next few years in case this does happen.

Dan, I don't think any of his rants mentioned new tariffs on EU trade.

Dan We have so much more available now than when I bought my 1st 356 in 1980 it is amazing. That said I wish I had bought some things which have not yet been reproduced and hoarded them. Hard to predict the future. So-called won't get everything he wants.

True, but a lot of repro parts are made in Asia and Latin America, which he has threatened.

As was stated in an article in Time magazine, "We're selling airplanes and software. We're buying fruit and shoes." Receiprocal action by other countries would be extremely detrimental to our economy. May saner heads prevail.

Hoarding of parts in small volume market will ultimately backfire. If part X seems a good deal and you hoard a bunch (for whatever reason), supply will go down and the price will go up. The quantities necessary for this to happen in a small market are low. You get your stash of part X but we all have to pay more for it. If a bunch of us hoard different stuff, the prices of everything rises. This has happened with Bosch distributor rebuild parts. For years, the supply and demand of shim kits, insulator kits, clips, and rebuild parts was sufficient to keep prices at about $15/kit retail. About five years ago, there was rumor that Bosch wasn't going to supply these anymore. The rumor wasn't true but some folks started hoarding them. So the same parts that were $15 are now $50. All of the Porsche and bug suppliers can still get them but the demand drove the prices up. There is no reason for them to come back down.

Bruce, thanks for the Bosch info. I just ordered some bits to rebuild an iron distributor and got sticker shock. I have a stash of parts left over from past rebuilds so I didn't bother paying for a shim kit this time. The price of those is stupid, but you can't whittle one from a bar of soap.

As regards current events, the sky is not falling but there are those who benefit by yelling that it is. New regime, old regime, and future regimes, it never stops. Relax.

I've got a son in CA and a daughter in CO. Win - win. But I do like to shop local.

So that's why we have an annual 500 billion dollar trade deficit, expensive Brazilian bananas and Italian shoes. Time magazine, not even decent toilet paper.

I doubt that Italian shoes impact the trade deficit. When was the last time you saw someone driving a 356 in Italian shoes? Nikes and other athletic shoes I would agree with.
