OT Lottery Number

#1 Post by Jim Beam »

Just learned that Donald Trump's draft lottery number during the Vietnam War was 356. Not intended as political - just spooky.

356?! Heck, the four of us guys living together at the time weren't so fortunate. Our numbers came up 1, 2, 11 and 47 (me). #1 and 2 got nailed right away, #11 got a divinity student deferment and I got my notice pretty quick.

I can't remember what number I drew, but I was told that I was so far down on the list, they would draft women, children and dogs before they took me. Told I would have to volunteer.

I missed the draft by 2 years. In college, I had plenty of Nam vets on the dorm floor - unfortunately, I was too young and self absorbed to fully understand.

How did this work ? Did you pick straws... or get numbers allotted ?

They put 366 birthdates in pill capsules and drew them one by one, first date drawn got #1, etc. http://www.historynet.com/whats-your-number.htm

If you were draftable (no deferments) in 1970, they drafted according to your number (so they were unlikely to get to high numbers). If you were in the 1970 class, as I was, and survived that year without getting drafted, then everyone left in the 1970 class moved back behind the new 1971 class.

I still remember watching the drawing at my college fraternity in my senior year, graduated in 1970 and student deferment was disappearing so I was in the first year "class" of the lottery. I've actually had in mind I drew 356, but just looked it up and I got 337.

In my view the politicians who support the war should be the first ones drafted.

Eat your own cooking, so to speak.

That's a concept I could buy into!

To add a little 356 content, had I not hesitated (I came within a very small hair of buying this '61 Cab in 1967), I would have been driving this car when the first draft lottery took place (my pics). (And no, the "C" is not correct!).
