Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
Yes, Jean-Luc it is a real Devin D. The project has been moving slowly while I finished my Elva Courier but I think the Devin is about to see some real progress.

Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
The guy that has that car is a 356 guy I think. Devin would not have issued a serial number for a bare body. The guy that put the body onto the VW chassis would have either retained the VW number on the chassis or gone to the state DMV and applied for a state issued Special Construction number plate. Only cars built completely at the Devin factory have Devin VIN/serial numbers.

Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
I must admit that the Devin project has moved slowly so far but today I picked up the screwed and glued frame/body assembly and I will move a bit quicker on the mechanical work that I am doing myself. It will be rolling around soon.

Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
Thanks Greg. I wasn't planning on going due to the long distance tow. I also hear that there are a few guys that are really hooked up out West which does strike some fear in me! I don't see it being ready for Sebring in March but it should make a race or two in 2018. You should come to Watkins Glen in September. You wont regret it.gregorycampbell wrote:Looking good Cliff. A bit more progress. It's all custom fitting so it doesn't go quickly.

Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
The 1961 Norton Manx 500 stopped by for a visit. I was working out the engineering on the Devin front brake caliper mounts as well as the rear brake set-up today. I'm off to the machinist tomorrow.

Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
More progress...
The rear shock bolts are temporary until I add tow hooks.
The car is 80% plumbed. The suspension is finished front and back. The steering is waiting for custom tie rods and the steering column needs to be welded together when the roll bar is installed. The brakes are finished other than waiting for custom front caliper mounts. The shift linkage is completed. The hydraulic clutch system is finished. None of this is "stock" exactly so the details need to be worked out and that is the fun stuff that I enjoy a lot. Pretty soon the car gets a roll bar and then the body man installs inner fender wells, other detail work, and paint. Then it comes back to me for electrics and final assembly. It's a simple car but it still takes lots of time. The rear shock bolts are temporary until I add tow hooks.

Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
Does a 2009 Smart Car count? That goes in the race trailer behind the racer. I had a 235 horsepower Caterham 7 for 9 years but I sold it to finance other car projects. My wife and I owned a few Alfas in the '80s and early '90s as our daily drivers. Two of those gave 100k miles each reliably. A long time ago I had a '64 Pontiac Tempest convertible, homebuilt dune buggy, Karmann Ghia, Mercedes 220S, and a Datsun 2000, 510, and a 240Z, another Elva race car, Mustang, a GTI, Daimler SP250, Corvette Z06, then I returned to the 356 where I started as a teenager. The daily driver is a 2010 Mini base model. Your question got me thinking about the many different cars I have owned and restored. Frightening! After a while they each were sold to finance the next one until later in life when the kids were grown and educated and I could acquire a few good cars. Even then one must occasionally go to finance something else.
I have a few bikes also and this one is for sale to fund other projects...

Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
The front brakes are completed. I installed an engine and some wheels and tires. It sort of looks like a car. The next stop is to the roll bar fabricator where it will also get a steering column Then off to the body shop for finishing. Then back to me for electrics, gauges, and the final details.

Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
Are you going SVRA?
You mention that “none of this is ‘stock’ exactly...”
Will they allow all the upgrades,...coil overs, disc brakes, etc.?
Just wondering.

Re: Devin D Porsche Race Car Project
Hi Steve,
I have run the '55 Cab with HSR, SVRA, and Brian Redman. All 3 allow more modifications than VSCCA and Monterey(sort of but if you look at the Ron Goodman coupe it wouldn't pass SVRA tech). Mostly they allow updates to 1972 specs. For instance my '55 has C disc brakes and the later shock mounts and the engines are free except bore and stroke, period carbs, and distributor ignition. You can't use different suspension pick up points or spring and shock types. The Devin has coil over shocks from the factory and as long as you don't use remote reservoir shocks you are ok. Wheel size and tires are regulated. The Devin was factory built from 1958-1967? So Porsche disc brakes or VW disc brakes are ok but no Brembo exotic stuff.
Cliff
