RS60 or RS61 Frame Design Detail Pictures Needed

#1 Post by C J Murray »

Hello All-I am looking for pictures or drawings that show how the frames were made on these cars. Not much on the net that I could find. These were the first Porsches with tubular space frames, correct? 550s were simple(but heavy) ladder frames, correct?

Cliff, the '56 550A was the first Spyder with a multi-tube space frame, and then the RSK's before the RS60's.
I'll find some pictures a bit later, unless someone else can post some for you.

Here is a late 550 frame, from type550.com website, but not a true space frame...

The 550A Spyder frame, from page 220 of the original Excellence was Expected book.
I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for.

Jon, that is great. How about the RS60 and RS61? I understand that they were much more sophisticated.

Here is an RSK frame. I don't know that the RS60/61 frames were "much more sophisticated".
Have your Dad post a picture of his Elva frame.

Dad has been low profile lately. He must be cranky, The Elva is light years ahead of the Porsche racers of the day. Porsche finally had to step up their game after embarrassing themselves by going to Elva for a competitive car. The Brits made some very good lightweight race cars.

I am in Naples FL and have tickets to visit the Revs/Collier museum Thursday so I hope to get a little insight there. Being not very smart it just occurred to me to look at their website where I found some very good pictures there of the RS-60/61 and the Elva. Based on their data the RS-60 weighs 30% more than the Elva with the same lump in the back!!! Amazing.

Cliff, I've rebuilt several transmissions for the Revs/Collier Museum, including two 908's recently. The 908 LH ran at Rennsport V last year.
This is the transmission to their RS60, which I rebuilt for them a few years ago...
