I know I am probably crazy but am in the middle of trying to get an 88 924 Special Edition with the sweet 030 suspension. More fun to drive a slow car fast that a fast car slow. Handling is my sweet spot, difficult to resist.

This is sacrilege, but wouldn't a Miata be even sweeter, and less weight to go with the equally meek engine? :P

The only 924 I could stomach would be a Martini one, a neighbor has one and I always think, maybe...

I have the last year of 944 made - 1991. Only 500 944S2 coupes imported to the US. I recently rebuilt the engine and it also has a 968 head on it with variocam. 240 hp out of a straight 4, more power than a 951 and really torquey. Handles great, massively upgraded suspension that the PO put on.

Good cars. Also had 3 928s, last one was in 2004, sold it for 8K. Cannot buy an S4 for that now!!!

Doug, the 88 SE has like 170HP (not too bad for a 4cyl in 88, probably moves pretty good actually), many would consider it the best 924 to own.

Adam, The Martini's are a great looking car but purely cosmetic. The decals, interior and rarity make up for a lot, but I can't get passed the NA 2.0L.

Adam C, sounds like a mean 944 you have there. That is a lot of power for a NA 4cyl. When getting to these power levels 944's make more sense since you can fit a lot more tire under them. I am not against box flares, but don't like them when they are just for looks (like a stock early 944) To me, flares only required when you need more tire.

Martin, Miata's will appreciate (especially unmolested examples), It seems they have already hit the bottom of depreciation curve. Not my cup of tea, but I understand the appeal and can appreciate them.

Brian, the only thing that makes me cringe about these early GTI's on the Autobahn is that short 5th gear. I remember mine screaming at like 4500 at 75-80MPH. Europe probably had different ratio's though. They are quite desirable in Europe these days, starting to see these get shipped back.

Sorry for the sacrilege! Lets us continue to be grateful 356 owners!

Quoted HP is 160 but owners say feels like more compared to stock 1988 924S so maybe special care went into the Special Edition engine builds.
