Getting Excited!
Well the future is near and the Techies and Millennials are in a frenzy over what they saw at the big CES show. Yes you're right it's the inevitability of the "self driving" and "driverless" cars that are promised in just a few short years! Google, Apple and all of the major manufacturers are busy testing and re-testing prototypes to be the first and best. It won't be long and that ancient relic S 90 in the garage will be put out to pasture once you can Tweet, Google, Snapchat, Facebook or text while swiftly being shuttled from one coffee spot to another all the while being totally connected! Glory be! I just can't wait.
The Insurance companies are excited, the Highway Patrol are excited (won't have to exit their cruiser to write tickets) speed electronically controlled, the auto manufacturers are excited (everyone will have to buy or lease a new self driving car) and the government will quickly be able to identify the "rebels" not inclined to conform!
So let's hear just how excited you will be once your hands can be free of that steering wheel and your feet freed from the bondage of pedals. The future is near! And you won't even need to learn how to park or read directions to get to where ever your going. That is if you still can think of where you are trying to go!
Maybe someone with better tech skills than me can insert a "poll" to show just how excited the geriatrics on this forum are. Mine would be something like "when they pry my cold dead fingers off the wheel" or something like that

They will have to pry my cold, dead fingers off my steering wheel.

Re: Getting Excited!
Will be well past all of our lifetimes when EVERY car on the road is autonomous.
It is actually a blessing in disguise for us driving collector cars around on public roads. The texters cars will stop short of your rear bumper all on its own at stop lights and they won't swerve into oncoming traffic just so they can finish that last sentence typing an email.
It is a win-win. The generations that don't want to drive won't have to and those of us who do want to drive won't have to worry about distracted drivers.

I don't even like the silence of a Prius. If you love machinery riding in an appliance will be depressing.

I hope Microsoft isn't programing the autonomous cars! Scary.

Re: Getting Excited!
This is a depressing topic, +3 on the cold dead hands comment. Just what we need, increased reliance on computers to control our world. Lets just remove all human discretion everywhere we can, let computers do it all. What could possibly go wrong?
Just wait for the day of a widespread internet crash, power outage etc. The world will be brought to its knee's and will be total chaos.
I wonder how driverless cars will navigate the back roads around here; mud, snow, ruts, bumps etc. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to sit helpless in one
Fortunately it will not happen in my lifetime. Coming soon though is driverless cars on sections of major highways, would not be surprised to see this in 5yrs. Will probably be override able for inclement weather, etc.

Good one! In time, we won't need a hearse at all because machines will do everything and have already made us extinct.Bob Watts wrote:In six years will there be a driver-less hearse?

Re: Getting Excited!

And the lawyers will have a field day suing for neck injuries of occupants of driverless cars. They get hit from behind all the time because they follow driving laws unlike most of us.

In Philadelphia when an empty(except driver) transit bus has a crash the locals rush onto the bus to claim the injury money.
