My Opinion, for what it's worth.

#1 Post by Bob Forman »

For many seasons Wheeler Dealers has been one of my favorite TV programs. If you follow the program you know they have picked up everything, including Paul, and moved to southern California from the UK. The last episode featured an AMC Pacer. In it, they totally bastardized this poor car, ruining it to the degree they couldn't find a buyer. Not only are they dredging the depths for something unique to work on, when they find one it's California-ized beyond the pale. The program has lost a lot of its previous charm and is becoming more like the many vacuous car-fixer-upper shows that populate the networks. It's a shame. Oh, and no offense intended for my California friends.

I was actually looking forward to see what they would do to a Pacer. I thought they might try to give it some sort of muscle car treatment, like what's popular now with Gremlins. But what a disappointment and a real missed opportunity. The worst they've ever done as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, the Pacer is a joke. My DVR must have known this because it failed to record that episode.

More importantly, how the hell does Edd afford to live? Is he homeless? Does he live in a shelter? He works like a dog and only gets a small amount based on what profit they squeak out of the sale. Sometimes Edd works endless hours and the sale is a net loss! Poor Edd.

Maybe he's paid by the TV show's production company.

Thank you Captain Obvious! :P But I thought these were "reality" shows.

Edd is actually pretty well-off. They estimate his net worth to be about $1.5 mil. He owns a product design business and appears on lots of TV and radio shows in the UK. I always wonder how much of the work he really does.

It is one of my favorite car programs. Edd really knows his cars and it is fun to see him take them apart and put them back together I don't think that there was anything that he could do to make the Pacer better (think lipstick on a pig).

The Pacer was a horrible car; nothing good about it. I work for the State of California and many years ago I borrowed cars from the state garage for state business. Back then the state garage had three cars to choose from: the Pacer, the Gremlin and the Pinto. The cars came with no radios or AC. I quickly befriended the garage staff so that they would give me the Pinto. I figured I would rather suffer a fiery death in a Pinto then to be caught dead in a Pacer or a Gremlin.

And that was before the budget problems.

This was during Jerry Brown's first term as governor back in 1975. He was cost-cutting back then, and this is why the state garage had only the cheapest and least desirable cars available. The stripped down Pinto was the best of the lot.

With all that graft and collusion, something had to give.

He also took away our state brief cases, even the ones where California had been spelled Callifornia.

But the endings are all the same, sadly. [sigh]
