March 1982.
I feel as if i am the youngest here. I dont own a 356 yet but, i can blame a family member for letting me drive his 58. That drive was one of the most thrilling i've had and all i did was cruise. He kept telling me to give it some gas but i was in no hurry so the speed limit was fine with me. I've never drove a car that has made me feel so incrediably intune with the road. On the other hand tho the only car i have built myself was a drag inspired 92 mustang. In turn i sold this past year due to the fact i was tired of the noise, tired of hein joint suspension, and last but not least crawling over a roll cage every time i got in or out.
So here i am doing research on all the options, learning the history of the cars, and maybe one day being able to add some posts that will help another out.
One question i asked my uncle was "what makes these cars so special to the owners?" I think i am only starting to scratch the surface to the question i once asked. One day i intend to know.

were you born before during or after 356 production
Mark,
I was born in August 1943 when Kubelwagens were still in use! I think I now look as old as a Kubelwagen or perhaps the Kubelwagen looks younger.

Pre-356
Mark,
Great post! Like Roy Alan, I pre-date the 356s, as I was born in July of 1944. My dad has a special deferment because he was a metallurgist necessary to the war effort. When I was young I never saw a lot of 356s like the California guys. I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland.
Mostly 1957 Chevys, 1956 two seater Thunderbirds with the opera windows, an occasional Mercedes two seater, and a Jaguar XKE. The latter was the dream car, even though it never ran well, while the 57 Chevy was the hoped for car. I didn't even see a lot of English cars.
I owned a Triumph TR-2 in college and a Porsche 944 in the Eighties as a wannabee 911 owner. I have always loved the 356s after seeing them in a couple of movies during the Sixties. Paul Newman drove one is his Harper movies. I really admire (and envy) the guys who have owned them all their lives.
My motto is, better late a 356 owner than never!

Hi Ed,
Well you have certainly owned and still own some very nice cars! Just tell me two things which car did you like to drive best of all and sorry I can't remember a 1957 P133? Maybe I should, is it a Porsche model?
Did you race the spyder?
Another question ( if you don't mind looking back ), of the cars you no longer have which one would you like back?
Sorry more than two questions!!
Roy

I am a 1954 model. I share the birthday of the Speedster, June 30, 1954. I became aware of this just last year while reading the 50th anniversary meet book. I did not own a 356 in 2004, and was unaware of the gathering in Monterey. I wish I had spent my 50th with the Speedsters! I plan on doing the 60th if a gathering is held. I bought a 1964 C coupe in 1972 with saved paper route money! I proceeded to burn up the #3 piston while racing a 390ci Ford Torino . I repaired the engine in my dorm room. I then passed that ball of rust and bondo on to a new owner. I then bought a 1969 912 Targa from a sheriff's auction with the motor in pieces in the back seat. I rebuilt the motor and loved the car for 2 years but sold it to continue in college. I found a 1965 C Cabriolet in 1978, and enjoyed it for a year, but real life intruded and Porsches gave way to Mercedes sedans for 25 years. I also owned 2 914 2.0 cars for short periods. I started thinking about a 356 again when I moved to California. I found out about Intermeccanica replicas and in 2007 committed the sacrilege/smart move of buying a 2002 Intermeccanica Roadster. I do not claim to be a 356 owner, and do not consider my car a Porsche. But I love the way it looks and sounds and drives. I also really appreciate people that spend the time and money to preserve 356 Porsches.

Will,
The way it LOOKS and SOUNDS is almost as important as the the way it goes. Half the time I think most of us never drive our 356's to the limit or anywhere near. Its almost impossible here on our roads to do anything approaching that with the penalities that you can suffer if you do!!
I like to look at the shape of plastic speedsters as much as sheetmetal ones. In fact I wouldn't mind a nice replica one sitting next to my "A". Probably from a normal drive point of view I wouldn't notice much difference either.
For me its the looks of the car!!! ( maybe different for others!)

D.O.B.
Produced in 1963, perhaps not far from a Porsche.
