Porsche Licanse plate Identification
I bought this Porsche license plate at a swap meet
The guy I got it from told me that it came on the
front of his 911 when he bought it new in 1968.
No, I didn't believe him but still he insisted that it was true ?
Can anybody identify this plate or offer any additional info. ??
see attachments ....thanks to all Rich CA

Re: Porsche Licanse plate Identification
While it looks like a wannabe black and yellow CA plate, in CA if it were on the front of the car it was for decorative purposes. It wasn't (and isn't) legal here. Somewhere else? Who knows?
Re: Porsche Licanse plate Identification
The personalized California license plate: PORSCHE is owned (or certainly was a couple of years ago) by Pete and Cheryl Dunkel. The story of how they acquired it was posted on the wall in the "showroom" of the family business when that business was located across the street from Angel Stadium in Anaheim. We saw it during one of the March "parties" at their place. Thanks to them, again, for the great times there.

HI thanks
I am not trying to run it as a registered plate
I am trying to figure out if this actually came from Porsche
as a front dealer blank plate on there new 911 cars in 1968
and or if it has any collectable value

Since the holes are slotted and not round like on a license plate, I'd put it in the category of a novelty plate. You can still get them off eBay, etc. Maybe someone knowledgable about the early 911's can weigh in on whether or not this was a dealer-supplied item.

Re: Porsche Licanse plate Identification
These plates were popular in the mid-1980s, before the manufacturers' lawyers started cracking down on trademark infringement. They were intended to be overprinted with the dealer's name and/or address/phone in the blank spaces above and below the PORSCHE name.
It is highly doubtful this plate dates from 1968.

Re: Porsche Licanse plate Identification
Looks to me one of those plates given out by Volkswagen of America to dealers in the '70s for new car display. Is there any very fine print on the border, lower right?

Re: Porsche Licanse plate Identification
I have two of the Honda version of these plates. The one with the dealer name stamped (from 1986) has "Automotive Wares, Rocky Hill, CT 06067" printed in the lower right corner and a 5-digit number in the lower left corner; the other (without the dealer name) has no fine print at all.
The Porsche plate appears to have a 5-digit number in the lower left corner, but nothing in the lower right corner.
