But otherwise, how was your trip?

#1 Post by Brian R Adams »

A friend just told me he is moving to Germany for a year, to stay with his daughter who is in the US Army, and needs a cheap live-in babysitter.

I asked him if he'd ever been to Germany.

"No. And I don't like Germans, and I hate the sound of their language."

Oh. ... Well, do you like beer? They serve the best in the world, you know.

"No. I don't drink beer."

<long pause>

Well, I hope you have a nice time in Germany. With your upbeat outlook, I'm sure you'll make the most of it.

Some people shouldn't travel. I bet he will do nothing but complain because things aren't exactly like they are at home. This is how many Americans act when traveling and they give us all a bad name. How do you see the beauty of a foreign land when all you have is anger. I'll go babysit for his daughter if she will give me the occasional day off to have fun!

Someone told me there was a rock band called "Big German Waitress" but I can't find any info on them, maybe a local group somewhere.

My friend will be doing some traveling to neighboring countries, as domestic duties permit. And he may come home a changed man WRT Germany and Germans. His opinions have been formed in a vacuum if he's never even been to Europe, and he's nothing if not opinionated.

Knowing him, he'll probably return saying Germany is the most fantastic place on Earth, and we should remodel our society after theirs. I agree - but only as far as the beer is concerned. 8) American beers are abominable, and I'm referring specifically to the so-called premium craft beers - over-hopped, chemical-laced, wretched bilge water, with very few exceptions (of which I cannot recall even one just now.)

Yes, that is a wonderful sight , pretty woman dressed in a Dirndl bring me some HB beer !

Brian,

Yes I have known a few people with the "Ugly Americans" syndrome. Not all of whom were Americans. Some were foreigners here in the USA, whining that Americans don't respect their culture because of some perceived insult. When in Rome do as the Romans and take them as they are !

OK, that's my rant for the day, I'm off my soapbox.

The Ugly American might say "When in Rome, do the Romans."

True. If they are just visiting, fine. The ones that get to me are the immigrants that come here because their native country offers no opportunities, due to their idiotic policies, so now that they are in the US they lobby to enlighten us to change our policies to the policies of their failed homeland. Funny how those people don't immigrate to Russia, China, or Saudi Arabia.
