Cuban find

#1 Post by Bob Forman »

This came from The Chicane tonight. This 300SL was apparently abandoned in the fields of Cuba by (most likely) a capitalist prior to the Castro brothers taking power. I hope the owner was able to escape the Island with its weight in cigars. What a pity.

That will get rebuilt, given what Gullwings are going for.

Yes, but only if it finds its way out of Cuba first.

You bet, that's an important safety tip. I can only imagine the number of collectors chomping at the bit to go there.

The car situation in Cuba is a time capsule worth keeping. The combination of natural and governmental isolation, limited parts, local ingenuity, natural patinas and custom looks has come together as a special and unique cultural entity. Before this gets disrupted with collectors buying this and that and cars going here and there, I think it would be really cool for someone (or a group of folks) with deep pockets to cherry pick a few dozen prime examples that highlight the depth and breadth of the cars there and keep them together and further preserved, representing the car culture of Cuba in a special collection. That's my vision... We are nearing the point in time, beyond which comes the change. It's only this 'original' once and I don't think a comparable situation exists anywhere else in the world.

I guess we are really behind the times. Here's a youtube video with 140,000 hits of the same car. Looks worse here.

There's also a 1959 law that bans the removal of classic humans from Cuba.
