My son is finally getting more interested in

cars. He has always paid some attention, but now wants a book on how engines and perhaps other mechanical systems for cars work. Anybody have any recommendations? Thanks, Ed

Edwin,

Here is something for him to look at in the meantime:

I sent this to my nephew who is a "car nut" but had no clue about even the most basic stuff.

Karl Ludvigsen's "Classic Racing Engines" is fantastic, though it appears it is now out of print a ludicrously expensive.

I think Sebastian is on to something there. When I was in high school my shop class used a text book that was a very good basic explanation of engines. Today, young people may be more comfortable getting that information online. If he is ready or will be ready for a book that explains how a performance engine should be designed and built then the best book I have ever read is "Four Stroke Performance Tuning" by A. Graham Bell. I have read many and none come close to the accuracy of this book. If you read it carefully and do exactly what the author suggests then you will get a fine result. I think that if he truly understands the basics of engine operation that he will understand the fine points brought forward in this book. It is also the sort of book where the information is not available easily, in one place, on the web so an "old school" book under the tree makes sense.
