Resources for Porsche Master Tractor Parts & Info

#1 Post by Jim R Phillips »

I have a lead on a Porsche "Master" tractor. Not sure what year or the last time it ran. What are the Masters worth, and where would I go for parts and service info?

Thanks, Jim

Wow, who's been taking pot shots at it? Looks like three hits just in the pix you included, particularly like the one through the VIN.

Roland was a great source for me when I needed several engine parts.

I went to a German tractor supplier (Singer) for the trim, tail lights, etc.

The Masters are pretty rare, usually you find Supers(3 cylinders) and Standards(2 cylinders). I think even the one cylinder, Juniors are more common than the Masters.

Of course the Supers and the Masters are much bigger than the 1 & 2 cylinder versions, which can be a detriment for a hobby collector.

great find. the supers are more rare than the junior tractors. I hope that most of the parts are there. Value of the master should be around $40,000 if completely restored. They are very sought after. Roland should be able to pass you on to the people that bought his tractor supply business. He was the North American roving Porsche mechanic for the tractors when Porsche was importing them into North America, and he would be a good source of technical information. He was always willing to help me when I restored a couple of tractors.
Does the motor turn over?

Mike, good call. Both Roland and John Hearn were very knowledge and very helpful. Roland asked the same question, if the motor turns. I understand the mid year 408s had crankshaft issues. This is an early one with the counter weighted crank, which as I understand is more durable. I won't know the condition until I actually pick it up, assuming I can close the deal. Wish me luck.

Thanks everyone, Registry is a fantastic resource filled with great people.

when you get it home, and try to start DO NOT use ether(starting fluid) it is way to explosive and could cause severe damage.
if the motor does not turn over, don't fret, it took me 3 weeks to get the motor just to turn over on my 308. Take the round cover off the side of the bell housing to expose the flywheel and try to turn it over with a prybar on the flywheel. If it does not turn over, take the injectors out and pour liberal amounts of ATF into the cylinders and let it sit for a few days. try again to move flywheel back and forth with the pry bar, and if it does not move, pour in more ATF. continue this procedure till you can move the flywheel complete revolutions. This will obviously not work if you have internal breakage.
I did this on my 308 which had been sitting for a number of years, once I got the flywheel turning by hand we hooked up the starter and it turned over easily. primed the fuel lines and she was running fine. Change your oil after the motor has warmed up to get rid of the ATF. Put fuel conditioner or oil in your diesel fuel. these tractors like to be well lubricated and the diesel fuel of today does not offer enough lubrication.

Another great product for freeing up a engine is Marvel Mystery Oil, I've had great success using it on engines that have sat for long periods. I fi;; the cylinders and to the same thing rock it back and forth until it will turn over, I let the oil set in the cylinders for 24 to 48 hrs until starting to try rocking it back and forth. Good luck with it and congrat's on a great find, hope you get the deal put together. Have a great Christmas Holiday.
