I'm starting a build on a 3-gauge 912 - I think I'm off to a good start … 8)

Patina is the in thing these days. They are only original once! You are off to a good start.

Wouldn't it be less intrusive if you just refilled the extra gauge holes on your car?

Oh, I'm leaving it with the five gauges - this was sent along with some other parts I bought so it will be wall art I suppose unless anyone can actually use it …
It's pretty bent up.

Thanks Greg. I have since read the information on the 912 website which clears up some details, assuming it is correct of course. For those who have not visited that site here are some links...

It is obvious to me that my father's car was a true 1965 model year car based on features and delivery date.

Thanks for posting the photo of 451326, delivered in Stuttgart in July '65 to an American serviceman. He drove it around Europe then shipped it home. After he traded it for a Volvo, I bought it in February 1968. It's been restored, of course, and has won its concours class in two Parades plus helped me amass the world's largest collection of second-place autocross trophies.

Yes, those are 7" alloys, and the fenders are stock. The car now has covered about 180,000 miles.

I thought the painted dash was kind of a connection to the 356, and I just like the look. So when I had our '67 912 repainted ruby red, I had the 5 gage dash painted red too. So there, the best of both worlds, ruby red, painted dash, 5 gages, and the much better looking lower dash trim.
