It was so obvious that I thought everybody knew. :P Every early 900 series car that I ever saw had only one speaker that was in the center of the dash top. This was a factory "enhancement" when the 900 replaced the 2 speaker 356. I can't remember if the factory offered a twin speaker addition for the rear but the aftermarket jumped on the opportunity very quickly.

I will not swear to it but I think Bill Block is wrong about any '66-'67 912 coming standard with 5 gages. I thought that you had to pay extra to get 5, even in '67.

Hi guys, my '66 912 #453962 is a (3) three gauge car. Not painted dash however, I believe the first (400) four hundred were.

Thanks for the photo, but I bought 451326 in February 1968. Factory info shows it was delivered to an American GI at the factory in August 1968. Judging by service records, he toured Yurp in it then had it shipped to Houston, later trading it for a Volvo in State College, Penna., where I found it and shelled out $3,995 less the trade-in ('58 Mercedes-Benz 219 with blown engine). It's been restored twice and has won its Parade concours class at least twice. Of course, the Nardi wheel as well as the underdash gauges and switches are not original. After 180,000 miles the car still has the original rubber mats, evidently made of German permanentium. I call it a 356D.

I don't know if this is the case with Frank's car but I do know I have gone to look at several 912's over the years that were advertised as "painted dash cars" but were late 65 or early 66. The overwhelming things that sends people down the wrong road is they start to restore the car and notice that under the black the dash is body color, and they run with it. But they are all painted body color, that is how they paint the cars.
The dead giveaway is usually the knee-pad, which if you look earlier in this thread you can see the differences in the early ones from painted dash cars.
I stand by my assertion that only the first part of 65 had painted dash 912's.

Another painted dash car just popped up on Pelican, not a bad price either. The dash once again shows the correct knee guard.

Apparently very nice condition for one of these. Since the engine is a US heater model, it may have been changed at some point as most of the early ones were Euro heater style. Just nice to see one not all clapped out! :)

I have one of those ignition switch plates, if he needs it. ;)

That white dash really pops. And with the red interior it will be a stunner when a clean and new again.

FWIW, my 68 912 does not have velour or soft carpet. It has very basic Perlon wool type and rubber matts. Fancy carpet was reserved for the 911's, tho I am sure you could have upgraded.

I have a March 67 912 with Euro heating system, 5 gauge and no mention as an extra in the original paperwork.

One I use to own, sold to a good friend about 9 years ago.

From: Max Handley ; Sunday Apr 21, 2002; This is a very early model with ser. #451458. Its 90% original ,with original paint and interior. The color is quite rare,color code 6403,enamel blue. The car was purchased by the second owner in S.F. CA. in 1969 and now has 89k orig mi.The other rare feature is the 4 speed gear box,with hill climb gears as ordered from the factory.

I went through the 912 Registry and it looks like the painted dash to regular dash occurred around 350700 for the Reutter cars and 451700 for the Karmann Cars, so my original assumption of the first 1500 cars was correct.

Yes it was a very special car, one I drove consistently, weather permitting for a period of several years. I'm trying to remember why I let it go. There would have been a very good reason and I believe it was the 67 911S , a very nice mostly original car with all the factory options available at the time. It was owned by the Glockler Dealership & purchased in the summer of 1967 by a gentleman in the U.S. It was the 7th 67S built ( july 1966) and at the time the oldest 67S known to exist. If I had a warehouse & the capital to keep all the special cars I've owned it would have provided a very profound museum, not to mention a small fortune in cars. But as it is I'm content to own 1 or 2 cars at a time & drive them weather permitting. My game plan is the old adage "you can't take them with you", & "be here now", I try and live in the moment. It worked for me , I was fortunate to live in the period where I could sample some of the very best Porsche had to offer & I've enjoyed each one immensely. Thank you Doctor Porsche ! Adam Thanks for asking , I like what your doing, Family 1st, & then follow your bliss. I hope the Porsche Gods are as good to you as they have been for me.
