Found this in the Factory Archives, looks like one of the early press shots.

The caption read,

The demand for an inexpensive Porsche resulted in 1965 in the 912 model. Its engine came from the 356 model range.

My sister's father-in-law flew from Portland, OR, to Germany to bring back a 356 sometime in '65, but came back instead with a 912. An Oregon State patrolman pulled him over on I-84 soon thereafter, saying he just wanted to check out the first 912 he had encountered.

After it had been passed down to my brother-in-law in the early '70s I first rode in the car. He called it an "early plain-dash" but the gauge surround was either dark gray or black, while the car was that infamous brownish yellow ("baby poop" they called it) with black interior. I believe it had three gauges, but can't be 100% sure now.

I wonder if the earliest '66 912s could have been shipping while 356 Cs were still available? If not then the one in this story would have been a late '65 I suppose. Rather a mystery.

Brian

A super early one just popped up and is being sold for a good reason. Registry Brother Steve Restelli is selling it so he can buy back his long lost 356 that Registry Brother Ibriham Kuzu has.

Wow, I think this is a new record, $40,000. Good thing I have a few of these painted dash cars hoarded for my retirement.

There's one less Painted dash now

I got a call from a good friend of mine telling me that two of his early Porsche's were destroyed in a hangar fire along with his airplane, in Camas Washington. Several hangars burned and several planes were lost. One of the Porsches was a 1965 912 painted dash that I sold him a few years ago. It was a decent car in Ivory with a red interior.

Wow, prices are way way up on the painted dash ones.

$57,500, and it has some rust!

To think I sold mine last week for $5000! Well, I sold it back to my brother, who sold it to me for $5000 a few years ago.

I love 912's. In fact I may actually prefer the right hot rod 912 over a similar 911. A better balanced car, designed for 4cyl. I guess I missed the boat on these. I was reading this thread and saw the one on Pelican for 21K, did not realize at first it was an old post! Not that I have 21K for another car anyway...
