Calling All Devin D Porsche Owners

#1 Post by David Twiss »

Hi Registry Members

I've just recently taken delivery of a 1962 Devin D Porsche. The vehicle is currently fitted with a 1958 Normal motor which has been subject to a full rebuild including new Mahle Barrels & Pistons (could be big bore), Sports Cam, Lightened Flywheel, Comp Value Job, Solex p11 40mm and Extractors. Considering the Devin D weighs in at 1100lbs the car hauls

I'd like to get in contact with other owners of these rare cars offline to discuss suspension configuration (I'd like to lower the Devin and tighten up the front end) and need advice on Rollbar pick up points. So if you own a Devin D or race one I'd like to talk or communicate via email regadring anything to do with these cars.

Now if I can only finish the 1883cc. 150HP in 1100Lbs sounds very appealing!

Cheers

Hello David,

New to the 356 Site, did you establish a thread for the Devin? I have recently purchased a Devin D roadster, and would like to connect with other owners. I'm going to do Porsche Power for it.

Hi Mark,

Welcome to 356Talk. This web page is a "topic" page (sometimes referred to as a "thread") for the post made by David Twiss. All posts in response to his post (including your response) will also be shown on this topic page.

Although the 1960's vintage Devin cars were originally fitted with Porsche 356 engines and transmissions, since the cars were not built by Porsche this topic is being moved to the Off Topic Forum, where you are welcome to continue the discussion.

The Devin is a very interesting car, and I look forward to seeing photos and hearing more about the cars you and David have recently acquired. And I'm glad to hear that yours will be receiving "Porsche power"!

Best regards,

Barry Brisco

Hi, Guys.

I am attaching a pic of a F/glass front end I cut off a '56 coupe a number of years ago. Can any one ID this piece?

Thanks, Jim

I'm no expert, (i'm new to these cars) but I think it looks like one of the front engine Devin body's.

Just getting around to sharing info and pics of Devin I purchased earlier this year.

I was looking for a project - which I guess I’ve found – and a number of things drew me to this particular car. One, it was a Devin, which I’ve always had a thing for (can’t explain, won’t try). Two, it has a cool history (to me, at least) in that the original owner/builder is still alive and has been kind enough to share vintage pics, along with stories such as auto crossing it in the day back in Champaign & Danville, IL. And three, it was once Porsche powered.

My intentions are to return it to its Porsche roots, get it mechanically sound, and pretty much leave the body/paint alone save for deck lid and a few other smaller repairs. Oh yeah, then drive and enjoy it.

@1959/60 - Built on ’53 VW pan with VW engine. Painted dark blue. With original owner/builder.

1960 - Still with original owner, Porsche powered in 1960. Color changed to current silver.

As it sits today – still with original LeMans style gas cap and even Pre-A (1955) tach and speedo from when it was built up in 1960.

Didn't you see "Planet of The Apes"? Charlton Heston is on the beach and sticking through the sand is the top of the Statue of Liberty and next to that was the nose of a Devin! Indestructible!

Can you drive a car on the street, in the USA, with an exhaust like that? I'm pretty sure you will not get away with it in the UK.

Hi Neil, our level of government oppression is lagging a little behind yours but the answer is both no and yes. Most State laws forbid straight through exhaust, no muffler. Most States also have a maximum allowed level of sound. Both of those would make it hard for that exhaust to be used on the street. Now, as a practical matter, unless you are wide open throttle all the time I doubt any cop would stop you. In fact a very large number of Harley Davidson motorcycles on US streets have straight through pipes that will burst an ear drum with ease. Many Harley morons live by the credo that "loud pipes save lives". My credo is "your loud pipes make me want to run you off the road into a ditch". Neither the Devin or the Harley is that bad at putt putt speeds.
