New VW Beetle Steering Rack Repair ??
Anyone out there familiar with repairing the steering rack on the new style Beetle? A friend bought a '98 a couple months ago and the steering rack started leaking fluid a couple days ago. He got estimates of around $1200 to repair it. How outrageous is that? Probably a simple seal failure, 6 hours labor.

unless it's a LOT easier to replace a rack in a Beetle than a Rabbit, the issue is not the rack repair itself, but the hoops you have to jump through getting the rack (which is attached to the firewall) in and out of the car.
12 hrs @ $100/hr -- I can see that...

If they fit a recon rack which is about $500, then that leaves $700 for labour.
A new VW rack on the other hand is around $1000 which leaves $200 for labour.
Which is reasonable.
I would try a VW specialist for another quote.
