Definition: a surface appearance of something grown beautiful, especially with age or use, which adds value to an antique or collectible and should not be cleaned.
Just age age and use. If you think surface rust is beautiful, then it's patina'd. Leave that thing in the weather for too long and it will be a masterpiece!
Fake patina, ESPECIALLY on fiberglass cars, is, is ....I don't want to incite. Let's just leave it at FAKE.

John,
"I am spending thousands to get rid of rust, oh well I guess I am
going in the wrong direction. I know now its just 'patinia' on my
longintudinals and pans, etc.
JOHN CLARK"
If your pans are still there, you can call it 'patina'. When they're gone, it's 'rust'.
Thanks,
Ron LaDow

ok just a question for the folks who do not care for "patina" or ratty original paint. Say a person stumbles upon a nice 356 sitting in a field or barn, or in someones garage, that has had a more tough life and it is covered in sun burned paint and/or surface rust. Say this person has enough funds to buy the car as it is a screaming deal, but does not have any funds to do much else with it but drive it. Should he keep it locked away in a garage until he has the money stock piled to restore it? Or should he just sell it off so the next guy can restore it? Not everyone is in the position to have a car restored or purchase a nice original one. Or would you like to hand out money for restorations? That would be oh-so-kind!
I love perfectly restored cars, I love perfectly original cars, and I love weathered original cars...they all have their place and their particular owners/drivers. Fortunately we all have slightly different tastes and that is what makes this all fun right?
although I do think faux-tina is lame

Jake,
You forgot the most important question: should he just jump in and
drive the heck out of it? That'd be the answer I'd check off!
Dave
I agree with you on the self-imposed rust

IMHO
"Oh, what tangled webs we weave, when first we practise [sic] to deceive" ~Sir Walter Scott
IMHO .... the wrong car got the "patina" job. It would have been more effective on the red speedster sitting next to it (... but not to such an extreme. Sometimes less really IS more).
I had a fiberglass '34 Chevy 3-window coupe Classic Race Car a few years ago that got the "patina" treatment done for me by a very talented airbrush artist in East Tennessee. Rusted bullet holes, rusted door edges and rusted aluminum rivets on the fiberglass body were so believable to one potential buyer that it kept me from selling him the car because "it looks too heavy with that steel body and it needs paint." I just smiled and said .... Oh, well.
(RHD? .... take a closer look)

Mark,
"My car is a real car... it just looks like something its not. Most
people like it, some get angry when they find out it is not an
original Speedster. I enjoy it and drive it..something I probably
wouldn't do if it were a true classic. All I can say is if the shoe
fits.....
Mark Hjelm"
All of this is fine by me.
As soon as you claim Tupperware as Waterford, I have a problem.
And if the shoe fits....
Thanks,
Ron LaDow

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with the P word. That word should only be used when talking abut porcupines.
