Hi Don,
The person who originally ordered your car must have known previous Porsche colors. I just looked at my C color chart and orange isn't listed. In fact all the color numbers start with "64xx".
Now THAT is a special color!
Thanks for the picture and story.

Orange
I have a 58 356a that was originally orange. Was painted a non stock green when bouhgt in 1972. I painted a 911 color peru red in 1977 before I knew any better. Am completely restoring now and trying to decide to paint the right red for a 58 model or orange. Car has black interior, althoough the carpets have been dyed from tan. Do not have the original engine. Any thoughts. Walt Nolte

Walt,
What is the chassis number of your A car? Is it close to my car which was originally Orange (105327)?
Sometimes they painted these cars in batches. But being a "Special Color" maybe not??

Hi Dan,Dan Macdonald wrote:Hi Anna,
Yes, that "orange" car is actually the special order "Orange" available on late A's and early B's.
My A was originally "Orange" but had several colors over it when I bought it in 1973.
When I restored the car I had it painted black.
Do you know the owner of that orange car? I wonder what the chassis number is. I'll bet it's very close to mine (105327). My car originally had a beige interior with tan floor mats.
There are very few orange cars left. I have only seen a handful in 35 years.
Thanks for the photos.
I'm the proud owner of the orange car in Anna's picture. The chassis number is 103592 - manufactured 19th May 1958. As mentioned in your post, she has tan interior, oatmeal carpets and tan mats, just like yours used to be.
Although it has the US spec bumbers etc, it actually never left mainland Europe until 2006 when I bought her. It was originally purchased by Lloyd A Mitchell whom I believe was serving in the US military based in Germany.
Kind Regards
Steve Joslin

Here's me ex (now owned by Registry member Scott Bensinger) 59A Orange coupe.
Orange, Rudge wheels, wind wings, Becker Highway-HiFi radio, day-night mirror, all per Kardex. Wish I still had it!
Also a couple of pics from a late 50's Porsche Parade, assume they are all original colors....

I think the orange color particularly suits the coupes.
I see Porsche is offering it again on the GT3.
Don't try this at home folks:

In fact I know this bit of road well, its the E35, south of Karlsruhe the traffic drops off a bit
and you can speed up a bit. Keep an eye on your rear view mirror though.
I was driving here at 240 KPH when I noticed a red dot in the mirror a second later a
Ferrari HURTLED past into the distance leaving a heat haze over the road.
240 KPH is 150 MPH so what speed was he doing.

The new orange is actually Signal orange. It was used ion the 70's on the 914. The 356 pictured looks to me to be closer to Gulf orange, again used in the 60-70's on the 911's. A bit redder than gulf orange.Michael Eker wrote:I think the orange color particularly suits the coupes.
