Another local barn find - 1960 T5B!

#1 Post by M Penta »

So here is another amazing local barn find I picked up last weekend! Found this T5B just a couple of towns over under similar circumstances to that of the C. It is way out on a dirt road in the barn of an amazing 84yo woman. It was her Husbands car and now belongs to her Son. It has been off the road since 83, stored in barn since 1990. Rough shape and plenty of rust but salvageable I think. It'll be a long term project for sure, but I look forward to getting it home and stripping out the interior to see what I am up against (hopefully not a parts car). Plenty of Bondo and was repainted green, originally Aetna (or Oslo?) blue it appears. The interior, which is not in terrible shape was also repainted or dyed, just a horrible tan color over the original red upholstery and head liner. It has some Carello fogs, and also some Hella 128's down below in good shape. One pair will be going on the C.
Lets just say it was a very good deal, no way I could pass it up. The guy just wants it to go to someone who appreciates these cars and will try to fix it, did not seem to care much about it and just wanted it out of the barn. A neighbor bought a 70 VW camper from the same property about 10yrs ago and has since had it restored to concourse condition. He decided he would be in over his head after we looked at this car and suggested I buy it, so I did! Pretty amazing to find both of these cars so close to home in Rural VT.

Good find. As Adam says there are no parts cars now. BAT would love it.

Thanks Doug,

Yea, BaT would love it, as would the crowd at Limerock this weekend if I trailered it down there. Not my intent though, plan to fix it eventually. Will get it on lift next week and see what I am in for. May end up outlaw with the 912/S90 motor in my C, and perhaps a Rancho type 1 trans so I can drive this one extra hard.
All just talk at this point though, need to see if number matching first.

You can drive it just as hard as you want with it's Porsche transmission. Just ask Vic. Get a Kardex from David Pateman and have fun.

I would make sure it is structurally solid, do the mechanicals and just drive it as is. No front Porsche script so should be a dual mount trans. If so that it GOOD.

Thanks everyone.

Adam, having the same scheduling conflict as years past
With LRP race day on Saturday. Hope to stop by though!

Doug, it is a two mount trans. Structure seems ok but definitely needs plenty of work. I’ll post plenty of pics when I get it in shop next week.

I can’t stop looking at this car, really like these T5s

Yeah like others say if it's structurally sound I'd get it running and drive as is. Too many shiny 356s as it is.

I like the T5s also. Aetna blue with red is beautiful! I would like one like that to do a GT clone but I want a sunroof. I had a T5 sunroof briefly that I bought in my own town but I sold it to Rusty Ferrel rather than take on the project. That may have been a mistake. I have a B T6 and a C I might trade for a T5 sunroof.

My last T5 sunroof is being restored by Cole Scrogham, it was cool, had a prototype electric sunroof, S90, and Factory Luggage.

I don't think I could get my wife to use that luggage. I am a manual sunroof guy but the early electric ones with the motor in with the motor are interesting.

That is a good controversy to open for discussion! What is a motor and what is an engine? I think it was my high school auto shop teacher that first insisted that IC units were engines and electric devices were motors. Generally that rule is broken constantly. Who is bothered? Who cares?

Got it up on lift. As expected, plenty of rust. It will be a very ambitious project, but have seen worse. Not sure when I can get started on this one, I have another much easier project I have been sitting on that I may do first.

It looks especially bad since the car got wet due to pouring rain as I fought to get it in the shop by myself (on gravel with 3 flat tires). I have since installed four good tires so it is now a roller.

Some of the pics make it look worse then it is:

-The rear seat pans look bad in pics but are still pretty solid. pics of inside look like rust but is actually glue or something.

-Rear frame rails need plenty of work but there is some good metal to attach too. Everything up high along engine compartment looks OK.

-Interior not too terrible, other then the awful paint! Gauges, switches and controls all there.

-Front torsion area appears OK. Enough there to work with I think.

-Rear torsion tube is so so.

-Longs and floors are toast. The upper part of longs and sills are still OK though.

-doors are not bad, bottoms even OK. Pics make them look worse then they are.

-Good unkinked hood.

-Glass is good

-Wheels are all KPZ 8/59 - 3/60

-Doors open/shut nice, lock posts are good and car is straight.

Not sure if numbers matching, but very well may be:

Engine: P*602773*

Trans: 37458 716-301-101-00

Vin: 111788

I will see about getting a Kardex.
