1958 T2 Resto Project Underway
Hi folks,
Well, I have my second 356 Resto underway with Bruce Baker in Collegeville, PA. For those of you familiar with Bruce, he is a super top notch 356 guy. My first resto with Bruce was a 1964 SC Sunroof coupe that I completed in 2001 and sold to a local friend in 2012. The current one, known as “Poly”, since she will be painted Polyantha Red, is a 1958 T2 Sunroof Coupe. Bruce actually purchased this car for himself back in 2004, took it apart at that time, and then it just sat languishing as the shop stayed busy with revenue generating projects since 2005. I purchased Poly from Bruce in October of 2018 and work began the last week of December. Lots has taken place since then and she is finally off to paint this week. She is going to be a mild outlaw in that all of the mechanical underpinnings will be T6 SC, including engine, brakes and trans. I am also modifying the interior a tad with vent windows, T6 door mounted armrests and a oil pressure gauge where a clock would have gone.
If you have an interest in seeing Poly’s progress, click on this link and make it a “favorite”. I update it often.

Anyway, I just rejoined the registry after many years and am looking forward to being part of the family again. Poly is slated to be back on the road in September and we appear to be nicely on schedule.

Ok it is final decision time on pallet for my 1958 T2 coupe. The carpet and leather are already purchased. The question is the final color. This coupe left the factory in Stone Grey. I found a great match for what was the original color from Porsche. This color was custom mixed using a stone grey survivor car in Arizona. The shop matched to paint hidden from the sun and elements behind bezels etc on the dash and the plaque in the door jamb. The color has a definite green tint. I am honestly erring toward Polyantha Red still but need more input. Keep in mind, this is not a number matching car. All the mechanical systems are from a T6. @ Waterworks Community

I hope you checked the paint match in sunlight. All artificial light, especially fluorescent, drastically change the color perception of our eyes. Even from person to person there will be some variations.
I personally would go with the Stone Grey especially if it was the original color. Very elegant color.

Thanks Ray. I have the spray out in my possession and have seen it in multiple lights at different angles. It does change under different conditions, for sure. That said, it is a pretty color.

Ivan,
It sounds like you're building the car for you, with some pretty cool upgrades/features, so I'd say to paint it whatever color moves you the most. Both Poly and Stone Grey are beautiful colors so you're in a win win situation.
Personally I absolutely love Stone Grey, and the fact that the car was originally this color means it would be an easy decision for me, but go with what you like.
Cheers,
-Greg

Poly has made it to the painter. He will tune up the paint prep this week and likely have her in her lovely Polyantha Red paint by the end of next week. Even he commented there is not much more to do before he sprays her.

remind your painter to paint the front of the dash top tan. It is interior color. The entire car needs to be masked off

The long process of polishing is now underway! Should be done and on its way back to Bruce Baker for reassembly on May 21. Long road ahead but worth it.
