The fuel pump set of 3 gaskets you show is actually the fiber spacer and 2 gaskets. Do you have the later pump that seals with an O ring as showing this article?http://www.type356a.com/installation.html

Ken, if it is the early fuel pump as would be correct for that year car and engine then it should be packed with grease (lithium wheel bearing grease would be correct) before re-installation. If it has been changed to the later style pump then no lubrication is required. For the early pump be sure to follow the factory manual rebuild instructions for preload or the pump will not work.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Thank You for your replies.

The fuel pump looks like it's the newer version (picture attached). I disassembled it last night and ran it through the ultrasonic cleaner - it cleaned up nice. Existing diaphragm looked okay but I have a new OEM red one from Porsche and it's pretty pliable so planning to put it in as well as the green gasket and filter under the top hat.

Ran into another snag tonight -I've got a new petcock rebuild kit but the long brass tube disintegrated and wondering how easy or not to splice a longer piece.

My friend is a retired engineer who is happy to help - wondering if it could be drilled out and new tube inserted?

I've rebuild Karcoma petcocks for my BMW Air Cooled bikes so not completely foreign to this type of work.

Makes me crazy that people leave vehicles filled with gas and let them sit for years upon years.

Today's Progress

#20 Post by Ken Tuvman »

Good progress today for 356 T5

Wheels were sandblasted, primed, painted, clear coated and new Vredestein Tires installed purchased from Tire Rack - good price, free delivery, great service.

Fuel Pump service went well - nice and clean with new diaphragm, gasket, screen, and screws.

My friend and I tried unsuccessfully to remove circlip that holds fuel petcock valve together - he took it home and was able to get it off and is working to replace brass fuel feeder tube the disintegrated.

We were prepared to clean the Webers but they look good - have new diaphragms but existing ones seem really pliable so will let shop mechanic (my son) make the call to replace or not.

Coming along.

If solid underneath should be a fun car. I liked the few T5's I have driven. But have only owned T6's my 1st a 63 B and all C/SC since then.

Thanks Doug - she's solid underneath but still lots to do - we've installed new brake lines / hoses, slave cylinders / new tires > to do: still going through entire fuel system - fuel tank treated, fuel pump good, Weber carbs looked good & probably will put in fresh diaphragms. Petcock will either be repaired or replaced - rebuild looking good at the moment. New fuel line . . .

Need to install new x-axle boots & axle seals.

Goal is to make her a driver and sort things out as we go . . .

Does anybody know where I can get a diagram of the sequence of installing the new parts into the fuel petcock?

It was apart when I took on the project . . .

Re: '61 356 / making progress

#25 Post by Ken Tuvman »

This week we rebuilt fuel pump, fuel petcock rebuild almost complete, installed new fuel line, on process of bleeding brakes, new CV boots installed, valve cover cleaned & new cork gaskets installed, new Vredstein tires,
Wheels sandblasted & painted & fuel tank also painted after being professionally treated. Webers will be inspected & get new diaphragms.
Tranny & Oil drained & will renew fluids & fuel filters & lube zirc fittings.

Assuming she fires on all (4) we’ll set carbs & take for a short test drive. Spark plugs & plug wires will be replaced. Valves seem ok & we’ll double check them as well as replace fan belt.

Lots of steps to get her back in the game.

We put the rubber floor mat in yesterday - there is a cut in the rubber for the clutch and brake pedal - there's a round hole that looks like where the rod from the accelerator pedal goes - is that supposed to be disconnected from behind the pedal and what is the procedure to do that?

Thank You!

Just put a scrw driver between the rod and ball and pry to seperated. place cup of throttle rod over ball and press to re-attach. The airplane is my RV-4. 8 years to build, all metal, nice plane. Sold it in September. got way too behind it. Now just my Citabria. I do have an RV-10 empennage for sale/.....Good luck on your efforts to get that back into service.

I might have a spare fuel selector body. It may be an early type though.
