Twin Grille Roadster 89809,

#1 Post by Rusty Ferrell »

Decided to replace the wiring harness on the above Roadster, since it is a 62 the sending unit is on the bottom of the tank. The tank isn't in good condition and as such I want to replace it with a new tank, but no bottom sender tanks are being produced. Question, before I order the wiring harness from YNZ I need to determine if it will have a top or bottom sender. I don't see the down side of having a conventional top sender even though it may be incorrect for this build. Any comments, considerations would be appreciative.
I personally think a bottom sender is a sorry design.

Putting it on the top is the sensible option and should make no difference to the price as under normal circumstances the sender would be out of sight anyway if it were correct, so being out of sight under the tank cover comes to the same thing for concours judging unless they lift the tank cover during judging. On the other hand you can always go to these folks and buy an unoriginal one.

You might want to check with a few judges if you plan on showing the car. I seem to remember reading that points not taken off for top sender tank in a 62 any more. Then question is paint new tank black like bottom sender or grey like top sender tank?

Ordered new harness from YNZ. They will build the harness to accept bottom or top mound so it can be changed down the road.
Also, exterior is Heron Gray with a brown interior. I'm okay with the right shade of brown, but off a little can be a big disappointment. Considering other color options and in leather instead of vinyl. Would appreciate any pics of Heron exterior with brown or with other colors. I've always liked the French blue, but maybe too much of a departure. Suggestions?

Eric McKinley did a burgundy interior on the Heron Grey C he is restoring. I emailed him to see if he would post a few pics of his. I think it looks great.

Thanks Doug, i am glad you think it is worthy of note.

It is still a work in progress as you can see.

Rusty, I hope you find these pictures useful in either helping with your decision or ruling it out.

I liked the burgundy interior, probably looks more red in these pictures as it was dark outside and I used artificial light to take the pictures.

The interior the car came with originally was a grey vinyl, but I didn't like that and went for what I wanted rather than sticking to the kardex.

Thanks Eric, does look more red than burgundy but very nice none the less. I’d probably go with the red or burgundy but I have an old English white Healey done in red leather. The red looks damn good

Headrest looks Fawn. Not sure about seat though. Not a purest so I would go with color combo you like. My 2 cents. If you followed Jim Nelson's Cab build they didn't go Kardex correct but did a beautiful job and I don't think it hurt the price. I know that Tony Garcia did a leather Fawn interior recently.

I got a message from another registry member today asking about the small straps holding the rear seats which he saw in the above pictures.

I got these a few years back from a company in the states called "the Lereyn" email address lereyn@aol.com

I have no connection to this company just a satisfied customer.

They do a good job at holding the rear seats upright, not stock, but they look and function well and are easy to remove at any time.

They utilise the rear luggage strap brackets.

Gents,

Just a quick update on this.

I have just been informed by the registry member I helped out with these details that this gentleman has now sadly passed away.

We're all lucky if we get to the next oil change. Always sorry to hear of another one of us moving on.
I've go another issue that I'd like to get some help with. Both lock posts have been replaced but the new ones don't have the holes for the latch receiver. Is there a template out there that gives approximate location of the three holes? Also, the passenger door where the outside handle is mounted is reinforced. The drivers side has just the skin. Handle fits just fine with new rubber, not so on the passenger door. Suggestions or comments welcome. Back to my opening comments, I just turned 75 and have been going through test looking for cancer. So far the scans have come back clean. What the hell, we're all going to suffer the same fate one day, until then enjoy your family, friends and these wonderful little rusted out Porsches. Cheers!

Jules, been working on cleaning and coating, trying to do a fit and function exercise. One issue I found today is the cable for the fuel door is too short, ordered a new one from Stoddard and still too short. When you have he time would appreciate a dimension of the tube from the firewall to opening on the inside passenger compartment. mine may have been moved for some reason.
