Is there a Seat Recliner Buffer Improvement?

The seat recliner buffers are critical because when they fail the metal to metal contact will damage the recliner. Mine seem to fail every few years, they split or just get squished out. These days I replace them with a rectangle of 1/8" thick silicone rubber-which I just happen to have- held in place with a wrap of stick-only-to-itself stretch tape. In the past I've used heat shrink tubing to hold the rectangular buffer in place.
These buffers have a hard life, because the force on them is considerable. I am wondering if someone has solved this problem with a longer lasting solution. may be Nylon?
