64 SC/GT Tribute - WIP

#1 Post by Sean M Rooks »

Hi all. So after 3 1/2 years of delightful ownership of my "mild outlaw" coupe, I'm finally able to personalize the car in the way I've wanted to.

Here's how she sat in late 2014:

Since getting the car I've made a lot of mechanical fixes and returned some aspects of the car back to original, like sourcing an original steering wheel and original seats. The originals were long gone and didn't come with the car. I spent a lot of time and money restoring a factory set and while they're not perfect they have done the job over the last couple of years.

I've always loved the more racy look of the GT cars and having a C coupe I naturally gravitate toward the SC/GT. Someday I hope to do a proper tribute with alloy panels and such, but in the meantime I'm doing some cosmetic changes I've wanted to do for a long time.

I've ordered a set of Fibersteel GT seats and plexiglass windows. The car's interior was black when I got it, and when I recovered the seats I got covers in the original red. My car was born light ivory over red, one of my favorite combos. New door and rear panels are on their way from Autos International.

Here's a few of me beginning the removal of the old, wrinkled, and dusty (the foam inside the upholstery has disintegrated) thick black vinyl:

I'm hoping to get the seats, red interior, and plexiglass windows installed in time for Werks Reunion at Amelia Island in early March.

Spent some of the warm garage weather this weekend doing more work. Got the door panels off, removed the window frames, window glass, and window regulators from both doors:

With the door panels off and the glass out it was a good time to access the door handles and replace the old, hard, cracked rubber with new from International Mercantile:

I've always assumed the rattle in my drivers door every time I closed it was the handles and missing cone spring. Nope - looks like the previous owner left his 10mm wrench in there.

Also noticed the door bottoms on both doors have been replaced at some point.

After servicing my Pathfinder I had a clunk when I closed the door. Told my usual mechanic next time I went in. He found a tool inside that another mechanic at the shop had left while replacing a faulty door handle. It seems my usual mechanic wrapped it with a bow and with all the other mechanics in the shop presented it to the offending mechanic. My usual mechanic had a hard time telling me as he kept laughing while telling me the story. He didn't charge me for the removal either, said I had made his day.

I had a Saab 9000 a few years back. The only good thing about that POS was the Snap-On 3/8 drive ratchet I found wedged near a motor mount, my first Snap-On tool, but not my last.
