Front hood gutter - is this original?

#1 Post by Bernie Brix »

Im restoring the the front nose of my '57 AT1 and am questioning how the front hood gutter was originally made/fitted.

Mine is quite battered, and it seems the front gutter is a separate panel which is lapped under the nose panel, while the upper sides and back is a profile pressed into the main part of the panel.

My question, is it meant to be a separate panel or was it originally all part of the nose?

thanks

Thanks, I have one.

Is this meant to be butt welded to the nose panel or lapped under like my battered example?

It was originally part of the fender stamping, not a separate piece.

Although made in one piece it’s common practice now to cut it off about like the repair piece, fit that perfectly to the hood, and then butt joint the rest of the nose back to it, and finish the welds so they don’t show.
Originally the fit wasn’t that close and the factory leaded it to perfection, like they did the doors.

To remove possible confusion, when Vic said it was part of the fender stamping, he meant the nose stamping.

Actually its both, the fender has part of the gutter, as does the cowl and the nose. In all three cases the gutter is an integral part.

Correct but I was referring to the circled part that the original post asked about.
