Sky blue 64c - Finished and on the Road

I've always been a VW guy and enjoy the restoration process. I do all my own work including paint, body, engine, ect. This is my latest build; it's a 63 rag beetle with a period Speedwell motor. 100% garage built.

I've recently purchased my first 356. It's an unrestored, original black plate car that's been off the road since 1985. Original paint is Sky blue with optional dark blue interior. It's matching numbers confirmed with a COA. I've replaced the brake lines and tuned up the engine. Other than a couple of electrical gremlins, she's performing beautifully. The body and floors are rock solid. Somebody has kinked the hood and tried their best to straighten it out but it needs attention. I plan to enjoy it for the summer then begin restoration in the fall.

Hi Dave, Your Beetle is almost too nice to even breathe on. Fabulous work. And your Sky Blue C with blue interior will be a standout car too. A really great colour combination. It would be interesting if you could keep us updated with your restoration skills. Thanks Dave, jim

The Beetle is fabulous. The C will be too. Your property has style and just confirms your high standards. Great stuff!

Hood frame repair pieces can be made by a metal worker or bought from Restoration Design: http://www.restoration-design.com/store/product/PP151LC Judging from your VW this will soon be beautiful again.

Bug looks great! Is it a built 40hp?
I'm also a VW guy, do all my own work and now mess with Porsches...welcome to the club.

Mild 40hp in the 63 rag. Just a big bore kit and a mild W100 cam. The unusual bit is the Speedwell Sprint kit with dual Stromberg carbs. It runs great.

I've started to strip the paint. So far, so good. No surprises.

Dave,

Very nice indeed! Most restoration candidates today are cars that would have been scrapped as recently as 15 years ago. You'v got what looks to be (so far) a good one.

From the picture of the left rear fender I'd like to take a crack at guessing the order of the colors top to bottom: The current blue/grey paint followed by grey primer. Next would be red/maroon paint over a yellowish primer followed by the original Sky Blue and the original grey primer. Is that about right?

I remember in 1976 I did that to my 1967 911 after negotiating the repaint in lacquer with a friend for $2000. He knew I was delivering it to him with parts removed, but he didn't realize it would be stripped to bare metal. He said I would have to pay $200 more. I readily agreed. :) It was quite an experience stripping it and it looked like a brand new car when it was done.

Enjoy it, I'm sure it will look a million when finished!
