Reinstall SWF Windshield Washer on the 356 1500 Super

#1 Post by Bill Dial »

Some time in the pasted the glass bottle froze and broke. It was replaced with reproduction. The washer pump on this model was dash mounted and used a pull knob instead of a push type. The pump date code is stamp JE which indicates it was manufactured in Sept.53. The dash mount is to the right of the cigarette lighter and originally had a blank knob install in it. Knob shown in the picture below and was found in the glove box. Since the car completion date was 2/3/53, this may indicate that the SWF washer unit was installed at the Hoffman dealership.

Hi Bill,

Looks like you have an aftermarket VW pump there. The version Porsche used was the push type mounted to a bracket under the dash on the defroster tube, as you describe. I would have expected your car came with that version originally, just like other USA de Luxe 1500S cars before and after yours in 1953. Your washer nozzles are the early type as would have been delivered from the factory; they changed in May 1953 to a domed type. Your washer bottle top there looks later than that used in 1953 cars too. The one provided by the factory in 1952 and 1953 (even through early '54) had a different SWF logo on top with a circle.

So yeah, a bit of a mystery. But I like the setup on your car. Use that extra knob position! =)
