1951 Splitwindow restoration...10766 - the journey begins

Hello all,

time is passing quickly and it is more than 3 years ago since i bought my Splitwindow 356.
Too many Projects so i had to set priorities now 8)

(i was still laughing on that Picture... i had no idea what i bought :D )

I want to start my Splitwindow Project this winter and i was going thru the parts (again)
The car still has it's original floor pan but the front is basicly not existing or in very bad condition.
Of course.. it could always be worse.

Does anyone know where i can buy the best fitting pre A metalparts for my 51?
Rubber parts ?
Split Windshield ?
Wiring harness ?

I know some vendors who are selling parts but i do not know where to go for early 356 parts.. in good quality.

I was looking for a Splitwindow for many years, was in the US many times and checked out some early Splitwindows.
I missed some really good cars as i was always too late for one or two days...
Than a friend called me from the US and asked me why i am always looking for cars in the US when there is a Splitwindow advertised in Europe... I imediately checked the add and dropped everything to take a look at the car two days later. It was located in Italy and owned by a swiss guy. It was sold new in Hamburg Germany and i still have no contact to any of the previous owners. I am lucky that there are some pre owners mentioned on the Kardex. Some where companies and some of them still exist. I have so get in contact during the restoration process and see what i can find out.

It was original Adria Blue Metallic and had a 1300cc Engine.
Except of the front hood and the transmission, it is a numbers matching car and the seats still have the original cover (!)
At some point it was painted red and had A bumpers mounted which of course did not fit very well :-)

I hope to get that beauty finished before i see the underside of the grass..

Will post pictures from time to time.

Tom Birch can also supply the best version of the vertical door seals.

They're the same 1950 through mid-1954, I believe, so yeah, for our '53 cars too.

Hello,

happy new year all together :-)

I have a question regarding the break system and the wheels of splitwindow coupes.

1.
When did porsche start tu use the finned aluminum rings on the front steel drum breaks?

2.
When did they start to use the finned aluminum rings on the rear steel drum breaks?

3.
When did they start using the slotted wheels?

I checked many books and they all say something different. I would need an evidence of an original car or a narrow VIN Number range
when they changed what of the 3 things above. Some books say that they changed to slotted wheels when they introduced the 1500 engine, some say earlier.
My car cam with VW break system all around so that is not correct.
Some books say that they first started with finned front breaks and the same time they started with the slotted wheels because of cool air..?
Anyway, in those days they tried to improfe the system and i want to get and install the correct parts on ma 1951 so i need a narrwow range or as close as possible when
they did what...

I found i complete break system from a 1951 some weeks ago here in Austria (not everything is on the picture but there) but i still need to know what my car came with.

Any help is welcome.

Hi Eric,

Great find. Definitely use those brakes on your car, fins or not.

As for when the finned aluminum rings started, I don't know. The earliest car that I know had them at the front is 10875. But of course it is possible they were earlier. As far as I know, by 111xx, all the cars had them, front and rear.

Which books discuss these cooling rings? I don't recall them in Conradt.

I'm sure there must have been a bulletin discussing this issued at some point in 1951. Perhaps someone has one. I will dig around.
