Pictures from Amelia Island Concours
I'm still going through the more than 750 photos I shot this weekend at the Amelia Island Concours but I thought I'd post a few up of my eight year restoration project.
I started the restoration in 2007 and was able to drive it on the field Saturday afternoon using the 4-cam engine for its maiden voyage.
In typical last minute fashion we first cranked the engine on Thursday evening just before loading it in the trailer for the trip to Florida.
I must extend heartfelt thanks to some members of this forum for going above and beyond in helping me achieve the goal of getting the Carrera on the show field this year.
Jacques LeFriant, Rainer Cooney, Ray Morgan, John Wilhoit, and very especially Tim Herman and Ernie Cabrera all provided essential support in getting the car finished just in time to make the show.
Thanks to all of you for your help in making one of my dreams come true.

Thank you so much for bringing it. My wife and I saw you offloading around the corner on Saturday and I nearly jumped out of our car while we were moving. I couldn't believe I was seeing the car in person.

Car looks nice. What inspired the front end work?
Loving the green Continental behind it too.

Re: Pictures from Amelia Island Concours
The car was customized by Dean Jeffries in George Barris' shop in California in 1957. He was a well known painter and pinstriper at the time he decided to build this car to showcase his metalworking skills. The car launched his career. He was wanting to clean up the lines of the car and make a statement. Everywhere you look on this car you find something that he changed or modified. It's pretty slick. The green Continental was nice but a little over-accessorized. The black 51 coupe was spectacular.Mervyn Hyde wrote:Car looks nice. What inspired the front end work?

This is a picture of Dean Jeffries taken just after he completed the car in 1957.

Re: Pictures from Amelia Island Concours
I loaded up the pictures I took at Amelia Island on my smugmug photo hosting site here:
https://solaros1.smugmug.com/Car-shows/ ... 16-Sunday/
The black 51 coupe was incredible - just spectacular
https://solaros1.smugmug.com/Car-shows/ ... -7R9gwDH/A
The shots from the Cars & Coffee event on Saturday are here:
https://solaros1.smugmug.com/Car-shows/ ... -Saturday/
Apparently a couple of the other guys in the class didn't appreciate the history of my car - I got a little negative feedback from the its not stock crowd.
That's OK - I've been on the receiving end of that whine for 45 years.
On a sad note - I just learned last week that Bill Hines - the 94 year old "Lead Slinger" and famous customizer passed away this month.
Bill did a bunch of the lead work on my car and there is a great photo of him sitting in the rear window opening applying lead to the roof vents in an issue of Rodders Journal in an article about the early days of Barris' shop. Bill Hines was probably responsible for more chopped 49 Mercurys than any other individual on the planet - just an incredibly talented craftsman.

Re: Pictures from Amelia Island Concours
Do you know what issue (approximately) of Rodders Journal has the picture? Yes sad indeed about Bill passing.
I wouldn't give one extra thought to the guys who don't "get" the Dean Jeffries Carrera car. That car is the exact intersection of where Porsche 356 and old school SoCal hot rodder meet.
Out of curiosity, when you restored the car did you keep the engine turning in the engine compartment?

The engine turned panels in the door jambs and engine compartment are the original ones built by Dean Jeffries. I carefully cleaned them and reinstalled them.
They show some scuffs and wear but I wanted to preserve these parts in particular since he hand fabricated them. On the back of one of the doorjamb panels you can see where he was trying out different turning patterns before deciding which technique to use. The car also has the original hex shaped knobs he made for the headlight switch and hand throttle cable.

Jack,
Rainer Cooney (on the list) has reproduced the Carrera fuel filter/pressure regulator that is correct for your car. You appear to have the smaller version of the current production Italian "Filter King" unit.
