Best Way to get fuel back into dry Carbs after the winter ?

Hi

I am sure this question has been answered before, but I am looking for a better way to getting fuel back in the carbs after a lay up. I currently remove the air cleaner and spray fuel into the carbs, it works but has the obvious safety issues.

I remember my Dads out board motor having an inline bulb to prime the carbs. Would this work and where in the system should it be fitted ?

I would prefer any additions to be out of sight.

I could not get the rubber hand primer to work on my 'A' w/ it between the fuel pump outlet and the carbs. It simply would not suck fuel through the fuel pump. Has this ever worked for you folks with "pre-C" cars?

My bulb is placed before the fuel pump so it's pushing through it instead of sucking from it. Mine works perfectly and sure saves a lot of cranking.

Bob,

On my 'A', a bulb before fuel pump would be below the engine tin, and require crawling under the car to squeeze it. So maybe the problem is more properly with "pre-T6" cars only?

Brian, The solution is simple. Upgrade to 356A 2.0. I know, bad humor, but I'm helpless to change, or, perhaps, it's hopeless.

I think the "rubber" primer pump is a crappy idea. I have had several of these items crack on my outboard motor line. Not a big problem on the boat because it is outside, unless it happen when I'm in the middle of the lake, which happened once. But even then it just spews gas all over the exterior area of my boat and me. Not the thing I want in my Porsche's interior.

I strongly suggest that starting our cars every 30 days is the proper answer. That only takes a couple of minutes, including walking out to the garage. But giving that doing that may not be an option, I have just removed the air filters, and using a squirt bottle, squirted a bit of gas in eash carb and fired it off. It probably will die, but just repeat the sequence until the bowls refil. Just be careful not to squirt too much gas in the carbs, and keep the squirt bottle far away from the car when cranking. A gas fire in your garage is probably not a good idea.

Problem with occasional starting, is that it deposits water vapors and combustion gasses into the exhaust. If the car is not subsequently driven up to operating temperature, you'll lose your muffler to rust.

IMHO, a primer bulb exposed to a lot of sunlight and salt air in an open boat will deteriorate the rubber much more rapidly than one concealed from the sun in the engine compartment of a 356. After 6 years, mine looks like new and doesn't leak.

An excellent point and this provides some reassurance to those of us that use it in the same way.
I carefully look at the bulb each time I use it and have seen no evidence of change after nearly two years of use.
