Re: '60 Cab project
Our favorite high tech ring compressor:
The Shasta/JE combination is really well done:
Starting to install the valve train:
Moving right along, we decided to use the carb/intake combination with the phenolic spacers, so we removed the existing studs and put in some new ones:
Of course, I would leave having forgotten to take the last picture; the fan shroud, generator, etc. Starting to make some progress.
We also made up the little spacers for the torsion bar covers from spare headliner, as the factory did:

The start of morning engine assembly:
We really liked the way the J-tubes came out:
Measuring the Zeniths for float level and accelerator pump volume:
The 90 degree 12mm wrench is a huge plus putting these carbs back on, especially when in the car:
Before the linkages and fuel lines are snugged up, that line is a little off in the picture, but the engine has nice company:
So at the end of the day we have both of the flapper boxes on, the J-tubes, all of the engine sheet metal (but for the rearmost, which goes on after the engine is off the stand), measured float levels and accelerator pump volumes, installed the carbs and linkages, oil canister and lines, coil, put on a real Leistritz muffler, and a single fuel line, as one is at the plater's. Starting to look like a real motor. So this is a 912 engine case, built in June 1965, with a 912 crank (all std/std), a wonderful set of rods, Harry Bieker heads, Shasta 1720 cylinders with JE pistons, and a new SC/S90/912 cam, but will run Zeniths and an early fuel pump and will look like a Normal of the period.

Is that magnificent weld bead at the base of the oil cooler OEM?

Re: '60 Cab project
Thanks, John, it is pretty, the whole thing is quite well done. Not factory, I think it is a VP cooler. We like the light weight (less of a chance to crack the case) and it does seem to do the job; I have one on my car as well. Picking up break-in oil tomorrow, fingers crossed for fire up....

Re: '60 Cab project
On Larry's run-in stand. Started right up after getting oil pressure up first, and we fiddled around with the Zeniths until it ran the way we wanted it to. Should be a very sweet runner.
I really like the stand. Wish we could post videos.

Trying to get these up during intermittent internet outages...
A little update on the interior, it's a work in progress:
The headliner is in, so the front wood bow has been shaped and fitted as well. You can see that the dash pad has been fitted too:

Re: '60 Cab project
So we picked up the cab from the interior folks today, and it really does look smashing. Not at the shop because of an untimely trailer flat tire (I'm so glad it's a dual-axle, could've been ugly) and flamboyantly bad traffic. Monday back at the shop for continued reassembly.

Re: '60 Cab project
Seems like the to-do list is huge, but it is starting to come together. The car is actually better looking on the bottom than it is on the top. So today we put in horns, re-attached the tension rod that the interior guys had for some unknown reason taken the nut off of, and started the million other little things, like the prime mover:
With that there, we started with things like s-tubes and heater gear:
and we tried out headlight combinations. Sealed beam, assymetrical, and symmetrical. Personally, I like the symmetrical's the best, but we still need to make up our minds on that score:

Re: '60 Cab project
Finished up engine wiring, fuel lines, and linkages:
Will affix the various locking devices here when the toe-in gets set:
Got the shifter and the aluminum heater slides in place:
Finished with initial clutch adjustment after the cable install and pedal linkages (though it's not attached in the picture):
A little new rubber for the battery box compartment (whoever makes replacement rubber bits apparently doesn't try them on real cars first.....):
and getting photo-bombed, we put in sunvisors and the day/night mirror....now, where is the windshield trim......?

WHAT! Thats it, I'm not following this thread any more after seeing the lousy detailing on the front torsion tubes. Disgusting!

Re: '60 Cab project
Of course the car is beautiful. Side note...my Smyrna green Karmann built coupe has that color on the torsion tubes when looking from the top. It has never really been restored. I don't think I have seen Reuter cars with color on the tubes so I guess the process was different. Don't know.
