Remove old sticker from broken windshield?

#1 Post by travisthompson »

I broke my windshield trying to remove it. I was mindful of this possibility and trying to be extra careful but a hard lesson learned. So- there is an 40 year old state inspection sticker on it I would like to remove and reapply to a new windshield. Any creative ideas? Can this be done or wishful thinking and I should let it go?

you could apply some heat from behind the sticker (to the glass) that's how i get decals off plastic and steel at work. the glass is toast now anyway. i slide a new blade under a corner so my finger stays off the glue

On the way back from the West Baden ECH, a large rock came off a flatbed carrying a bulldozer. Needless to say it cracked my windshield. The shop that replaced my windshield literally cut the corner of the old windshield off leaving the inspection sticker intact. The reason was that when removing the sticker, it was designed to destruct; (prohibiting sticker theft). I just propped the piece up against the new windshield. A few police saw it but never stopped me nor said anything. I used it through the end of the driving season, knowing the inspection was due in the Spring. Perhaps your old sticker may come off without issues though....

I doubt it will come off intact. How about having it digitally reproduced? Benefits of living in the computer age.

Not likely to get it off without significant damage since they're designed to not be removable. One option is a repro sticker. I haven't had a chance to order one for my car yet but I plan to. Here's the site that was recommended to me:

I hope you have already been successful but I might add:
Take several digital picture of the sticker, pick the best picture and
take it to a sign shop. They can do wonders, make any kind of
sticker and are reasonably priced (from my experience).
Maybe, post a picture of the sticker on this site and/or let us know
what happened with your sticker project.
Thanks.
